What do I need to know? 3.6 TDV8....

Thinking of moving up from the 4.4 V8.

What do I need to look out for mechanically?

What's the day to day fuel economy like? I get 17mpg on gas (so low 30s equivalent) and I'd like it to be reasonably close but I'd rather not push out for the 4.4TDV8 unless I really have to.

Budget is £30k absolute max unless I go for the 4.4.

I do 26-27mpg in mine. 30 is possible with a light food but not as much fun.
I would guess that the 4.4 start at >38k which only leaves the 3.6.
You should get a late 3.6 (2009) with low miles for 30 though.

I made the same move 18 months ago - although my 2010MY TDV8 Vogue SE cost a lot more than £30k Big Cry

Forgetting mpg for a moment I am spending exactly the same per month on diesel as I did on LPG covering roughly the same mileage and driving conditions so make of that what you will. Perfomance wise I prefer the 3.6 TDV8 over the petrol 4.4 and although the 4.4 TDV8 is even better you dont miss what you dont have or in my case couldn't afford Wink

Whatever you decision I doubt you will be disappointed Thumbs Up

I get 27mpg on mine although I do a fair bit of motorway cruising. My 2008 3.6 cost £25k 4 months ago with 60k miles on the clock so £30k should be getting you a really nice one. Lloyd Barnes

Machanically speaking, i havent had many things go wrong so far.

My 2008my 57plate was 28k from a dealer at the start if the year, with 40k on the clock, so far i have had to have the heater controls replaced due to a broken button, the transfer box resealed due to a leak, and a headlamp unit replaced due to a bezel dropping off all under warranty, So thus far nothing innterms of failure.

Have done 9k in it in 7 months and it hasnt used much oil, no water and so far so good on tyres.

A friend with another tdv8 has had almost fautless motoring for several years however has had the altenator pack up.

Mostly the issues with mine have been the usual bodywork problems around the rear wheel arches.

Happy hunting, There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Get your 3.6 remapped by JE Engineering for 800NM of torque if you want it to feel like a 4.4 TDV8 Wink Also improves economy by 5-10% in my experience. MY23 D350 HSE

Hunt almost over (was close before I posted).

Would a 2007 TDV8 Vogue have Bluetooth as standard?

May go for the re-map..... Wink 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Yes, dont be confused when you press phone and it says not fitted.

You have to pair you phone from the phone end not the car. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The only issues I've had with mine over the last 53,000 miles is a packed up alternator, power steering pipe leak and a new battery.

TPMS continues to not work but it's not exactly crucial, I don't care about it Laughing Discovery 4 HSE

It does have bluetooth but often drops the bluetooth connection after start. The reason for this is the phone is connected once the ignition is turned on, then when you start the engine, the whole of the audio software is automatically restarted and the bluetooth connection is often lost. As said above, you can then reconnect using the phone each time or I found the best way was to select the Venture Cam and then deslect it, which then automatically re-connects the phone. It only takes a couple of button presses and is a lot safer/legal than messing with your phone while driving.

As for the re-map - worth every penny of the few hundre quid they charge and makes the 3.6 TDV8 a much better drive. Having just bought a 4.4 TDV8 there is little difference in speed between the two but the 4.4 has less torque (700NM). However, the 8-speed gearbox on the 4.4 compensates for this, so there is little difference between the two on the road. MY23 D350 HSE

07 plate tdv8 3.6 Vogue with now 67,000 miles on it. Only issues, Air Suspension fault message which was lint in the breather of the compressor. Seized brake caliper, not the car's fault, due to not bothering to wash mud out of wheels. And Rear Diff failure, not common on these, just one of those things, otherwise totally faultless. So Far!?!?

EGR valves seem to be becoming more common items for failing, as well as alternator failure

The exhaust manifolds have a tendency to warp, and break the studs in the head

Rear calipers are guilty for seizing up, but OEM calipers are available from aftermarket suppliers now (same as D3/RRS) and offer a significant saving over main dealer prices

The only other real issue is rear hub bushes, and front lower suspension arms, but they were an issue, even on the 02 models Whistle

And as for the re-map, you would be silly not to do it Thumbs Up

How workable / fixable is the engine in the bay? For example, I consider a turbo to be an item which will need replaced as time goes on ( about the 100k mark ). I've read that the TDV8 on the sport needs the whole body to be lifted off to replace the turbo ... is that the case on the L322 version ? V8 or else ...

Correct, on a sport the body has to come off. It's not a big job though, can have it off in under a few hours when you get the hang of it

On the fullfat, it does not. It would need to be a pretty major repair to warrant an engine out on one of these...
The turbos can be done in place, albeit, a bit fiddly. For some reason, I remember having the subframe off while replacing the N/S turbo, but there was also a broken stud in the head, so it may very well have been that reason...
