Going back to Mark's original questions for a bit, I've no idea what the dealers use, but Trade stuff from the major manufacturers (such as Autoglym Trade products as I mentioned) is good value and saves buying lots of bottles as long as you provide your own.

Many years ago, I was speaking to a car valeter and asked him how he got such good results on his tyres and trim and it was him who pointed me in the direction of the Autoglym Trade range and specifically the Vinyl and Rubber Care product. Back then I used to go to a trade wholesaler, but eBay these days is my friend.

Cloth application? Not convinced it'd ever work on the rough surface of a tyre sidewall unless you've very smooth rubber there. Certainly, the Michelin rubber that my FF wears better suits a spray or a brush. The brush is more sparing and handy for all plastic trim and gives a more satin look. I learnt this trick from another car valeter. That said, I do use a cloth for smooth plastic trim, such as the A, B and C pillars. Better results than a brush or spray for that material.

Prices are generally better online.

I've also used the spray tyre shine but found it didn't last too long and therefore became more expensive to use, although the results were very good.

Be careful of fakes though! eBay is full of fake car cleaning products it would seem at the moment... Big money in decanting some crap into an "Autoglym" labeled container and selling for a fortune...

Fair point, but I only buy from trusted sellers. A fake product can be useless and the products I've bought have all done excatly the same job with the same colour liquid, smell (very important!), consistency and duration once applied. Si. <This is my name.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Who is dis'ing my Range Rover VXR ? Rolling with laughter

Looks like I'll have to decide on a preferred application method, cloth / spray, and then a product and then see if I can get a better value "bulk" quantity after trying the "retail" one.

I've used Auto Glym stuff over the years, so may have a try with their current product. Think they do a rubber care type thing and a tyre dressing, unless they've changed range recently.

Think I may have some turtle wax tyre gel in the workshop, may try that also.

Point taken about the cloth application, think I tend to put too much on, to ensure it covers all the tyre, and then either have to get it back off with the loth, which is just wasteful or it sprays up the car as you drive off. Perhaps a spray is better ? - at least some overspray on the alloy wipes off ok and tends to help stop the dirt sticking.

Meguiars Endurance applied with a sponge applicator is the best I have come across

The problem with gel type dressings is they do run off when they get wet.

I got a 5 litre bottle of trade tyre 'restorer' given to me several years ago (the bottle said - don't inhale, can cause lung problems etc - very worrying), but the think I liked about it was that it just made the tyre wall look like a new tyre as opposed to a shiny tyre (which I have only ever seen in a showroom). SO it wasn't gleaming after application, but basically looked like a newly fitted tyre. Steve

TBH i tend not to bother as i hate the stuff. moving sets that have been shined gets stuff everywhere....

Plus just think what happens if some of it flies off onto your bodywork!!

I stick to a good scrub and leave the tyres looking as honest as possible Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Holy thread resurrection Batman

Gong back to the 2012 question (nearly 10 year ago now - OMG I was only 8 then).... Whistle

I see lots of various products and I've tried a few but they all seem to spit up the bodywork when driving (even the next day) and seem to stain the wheel rims over time.

AG tyre dressing just anti shiny enough I'm afraid and the endurance gel spits.

First world problems eh?

I want a glossy look that dries glossy and does not spit - has anyone perfected this yet?

If you want a long lasting product, then I am with Stan on the boot polish. Plus it's nice and cheap, a bit like me.

As mine is a daily driver and I regularly visit muddy places, it rarely gets shiny tyres now, just a waste of time and money, hence the boot polish maybe once a month or two.

Yes I know I could get some flak for this, from the super shiny brigade, some people must have a lot of time on their hands Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

As in another thread about shiny tyres, I can well recommend RAC tyre shine from B&M at £3 a can. Dries on shiny and no side spit and lasts rather long, give it a try.

On my newish tyres I use screwfix no nonsense degreaser with a stiff brush to get all the brown residue off the side walls before applying anything. Look much better.
