Knock knock knock from the engine

Hi all,

Just noticed a new noise from the engine. Can you help identify it? It is a 2004 4.4 V8 Petrol

With the engine idling and the bonnet up I can here aseries of three or four "knocks" repeated at just under one second intervals. A bit like the rat-a-tat ...pause... rat-a-tat of a railway train going over points etc.

The frequency seems to suggest about 70 to 80 times per minute which is about 10 times slower that the crankshaft speed of 700 to 800 RPM.

It sounds like perhaps something on the belts at the front of the engine, perhaps a bearing in an tensioner pulley or alternator etc....

Any thoughts?

Is one of the drive belts de-laminating? Sometimes the outer canvas can come away and flap.

And if you increase the revs, the speed of the noise increases as well? Previously..

Thanks Simes, Contraband.

I put a mark on the front belt to see how fast it went round and it seems to go much faster than the noise frequency. I can't see anything wrong with the belts - but it is hard to see. How easy are they to change?

Yes the frequency increases with engine RPM.

If I listen with a long screwdriver to my ear it seems to sound worse when held against the water pump/thermostat housing. I know a few folk have had to fit new water pumps. What is the main mode of their failure?

Water pumps tend to start with play in the bearing, which then knocks out the seal. Any play at the edges of the fan?

Just checked the fan. Yes a bit of play at the fan tips but looks more like from the torquatrol unit rather than the water pump pulley. With the tension on the belt would I be able to feel play in the water pump?

I am thinking I should take off the belts and feel about a bit. Read the manual and it does not seem too hard.

Usually play in the fan in the water pump. They aren't too bad to change - allow an hour or so. Fit all new belts while you are at it - they are easy to get to when it's in bits!

Check the belt tensioners as the bearings in them do eventually wear

Thanks Gents.

Just checked for play in the fan and this time I wobbled it a bit harder to overcome the belt tension and sure enough there is a lot of play in the water pump pulley.

I guess it's a new one then. I assume it all comes as one lump / kit. As well as belts, should I be replacing anything else as a matter of course?

Thanks all for your help - a really useful resource - please keep supporting us less knowledgeable folks.

When your changing the water pump be careful when you pull it out. Tere are 2 aluminium pipes running from the pump to the back of the engine. They are only sealed with o rings. You will get new ones with the water pump. To change the ones on the back is a total T.w.a.t so make sure they don't come out! [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

And when putting the pump back on, be careful with the new o-rings that they don't get snagged by the pipes. A lube of them with something helps to prevent this. It's a Censored to have to take it all apart afterwards for that reason. Sad V8 or else ...

Thanks Chaps,

New pump fitted, new thermostat o ring and both drive belts.

A bit fiddly, but seems to be leak free so far!

Old pump bearing was Censored . amazed held water still as the wobble was quit bad.

Nice quiet engine again (for a 4.4ltr VCool
