Best "home" method for filling TD6 gearbox?

About to do an oil change on my Td6 gearbox. Lots written about changing it but can't find anything about how everyone actually got their oil in! I'll be doing it on the drive in off road mode so lying on back. The driveshaft seems to prevent easy access to the filler hole.

I was thinking of using an old ATF bottle and squeezing it in 1 litre at a time, or running a hosepipe down from the engine bay?

Any suggestions about previous successful methods welcome. .

If its any help, I ended up with my Discovery Td5 off the road for 4 days when I tried to change the gearbox oil on that.

No matter what I tried, I couldn't fill it up again. Restricted access etc etc......

Ended up ordering one of these ;

and had to be off the road whilst it was delivered.

Do a few squirt tests with bottles before you drop your oil !!

Just my 2p. I know the Td6 may be different............ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Hi Joe,
Hope it's not too late - these little pumps may be hard to come by right now as they are usually used for oil space heaters, but they only cost like €1-2 over here in the winter. And they work great on ATF.


Otherwise run a hose/funnel from the engine compartment - but get help or you'll make a mess.
And make sure the ATF temp is correct when checking the fill level. I can't remember if the AllComms shows live ATF temp - otherwise a cheap infrared thermometer on the pan works fine. Or you could get an IIDTool... Whistle

You need to check the diameter of these pumps Joe, they could be too large to fit in the filler hole

I've loads of plastic pipe and connectors so should have no trouble reducing down. You don't happen to know the size of the filler thread do you? I'm guessing it will be @ 1/2 inch? .

Gravity works fine Joe - I usually just siphon with the new oil can standing on a table at the side of the engine bay with some 10mm dia hose with a bulldog clip about 1ft from the gearbox end to stop the flow when needed. Routing is external. It takes about 45 minutes this way for the initial fill before cycling through the gears and then warming up the oil (so generally 2 further top ups). I use an old oven tray beneath the transmission to catch any excess oil.

Last time mine was done on my old TD6 they filled it using a large syringe thing... That was a tech in Stratstones...
