Thanks all for the advice, helpful and interesting. Looks like the Tooway system is a viable option so just need to convince myself the extra cost is worth it. If/when I get it I will report my findings so anyone else in a similar situation can assess its suitability for them.

No an iMac, it does not happen all the time and only appears after the post is submitted it looks fine then if I click to go back to the original page the second post sometimes appears.

Please ignore this double post which only displayed half the one above??

Tried a test and by closing the forum page after submitting instead of going back it seems fine. I suspect it is because the forums computer thinks my posts are of such a high standard they deserve a second viewing. Rolling with laughter

Haven't the islanders got together to organise a community service for broadband you can patch into (probably wireless as previously mentioned)?

A few years ago, I organised a wireless mesh network in our village because we couldn't get anything better than dial up, even though only 5 miles from a cathedral city! we had @ 40 people signed up to it with the mesh covering over 600 dwellings over a 3 mile radius.

Worth finding out what else is going on? .

Food for thought Joe90, what sort of speed did this wireless mesh network provide? Bearing in mind I/we do have broadband it's just that in the community where I live the maximum speed is 0.5mbps with little hope of any increase.

When you say the islanders I assume you mean those living in my area as Shetland is quite big, roughly 71 by 34 miles as the crow flies excluding Foula and Fair Isle with 14 inhabited islands.

A wireless mesh system similar to the one you mention would cover less than 60 dwellings which means 4 people signing up assuming the same ratio of uptake, so somewhat impractical i'm afraid.

What I have at present I can live with, it's just that I wanted to hear from someone who has a Tooway system who could tell me how good/bad it is and whether they're pleased with the service.

Your and all the other suggestions are much appreciated by the way.

Looks to be an interesting alternative to Tooway so have asked them if they have any partners near me. I could find no information on their prices on their web site so hard to compare.
