LPG Conversion Questions....

Hi All,

I've seen an LPG kit for sale taken out of a 04 Vogue - apparantly all complete etc. Can anyone tell me roughly how much to pay for a new conversion from a reputable company (all kit included) and if fitting a used one is worth it? Also any recommendations for a good LPG fitting company in Surrey? Finally I've read good and bad on doing this, seems that if done well no problems but I have read that it can cause problems......

I paid £1750 for my kit fully fitted. Not sure if any places would fit a second hand kit due to them certificating the work at the end. I've had no major issues with mine. Only one leaking hose and a slightly unsmooh change over from gas to petrol but was fixed with a software mod, all done free of charge.. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

As you say, it's all down to quality of installation. Also factor in convenience or otherwise of filling stations. I think probably the ideal is if you can get an LPG tank at your home. Not sure how much it costs, but it would get the gas cheaper, and would certainly be handy! Though I've never spoken to anybody who's done it, so don't know how practical it is.

One thing I've noticed is that speed of filling can be very slow if you're at a crappy pump, and it can take a long time to fill up, and be very tedious! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Thanks for your replies

From some research it seems that I have two good installers near me - DualTech in Bedfordshire and Arun Autogas in Littlehampton. I think buying a second hand system is probably not the way to go, a new system with its warranties etc is priority! Just going to get the quotes now - Rob - £1750 sounds like a very good price - when did you get yours done? Would be a 4 hour drive for me to Andy Evans, but might be worth it.....

Having just started looking at LPG do you know if the Government are planning any price hikes on LPG in the near future?

Just read that you can't take a LPG vehicle through the channel tunnel!

Never seen this mentioned on any websites/forums so far! Sad FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

I find the No LPg rule on Eurostar interesting. I have taken (empty) LPG tanks for a balloon over in the past. Why can't you take a car with empty LPG tank and then fill up on the other side?

It's about time the rules were re-thought and changed methinks!

From what I know the rule is to do with safety. Our standards are very high here and would guess most systems are certified and safe, it's coming the other way the problem stems. There are alot of DIY systems avalible in Europe that they prob don't think are safe. Was in a filling station the other day and a Polish car came in and filled up with LPG... After filling and paying he returned to his old Passat Estate and opened his boot to get something out and i could not believe my eyes to see two butane type bottles lying down in the boot with rubber hoses to his LPG system! No straps at all! Just rolling around the boot! Mental!!!

I had a problem with a newish hose (less than 1 year old) on an installation done by an experienced and certified LPG station in the Netherlands and I still ended up parking my car (not the FFRR !!) at an abandoned airfield close to my house. Luckily it was only the 60 liter tank that had to vent off (non return / 80% level valve got stuck open), still it took 4 days. Both 120 liter tanks were still full !!! It should be noted that the 60 liter tank was older (say 5 or 6 years) as it came with the car. The filling hoses and bigger tanks (and the new converter) were installed less than a year earlier.

So a very long way to say, LPG can have issues and in a channel tunnel train or car park that would not be a good thing. So I do understand the limitations (although I didn't like them when I was driving LPG cars).

Also if you do run the LPG empty, there is still a bit in the system that won't come out but can still create a nice big "cloud" of gas when it escapes. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
