I cycle about 10 miles each day in London as part of my drive/train/cycle commute and wear a helmet after seeing so many cyclists heads hitting posts/ kerbs/ traffic when pedestrians (usually either talking on the phone/ listening to loud music/ just don't care) step off the kerb without looking at all. It's not a legal requirement, but an A&E friend convinced me that it made sense given the cycling injuries that they were seeing regularly.

I took up cycling again a few years ago. Having never worn a helmet when younger, i wasn't happy wearing a helmet at first. I worked in A&E for 2 years though, and i have a young family who need me to look after them rather than the other way around.

It very much depends on where you're riding - but exactly the same as motorbikes - the number 1 killer of cyclists is head injuries.

I came off my bike last November whilst avoiding another cyclist who was going the wrong way up a one way street. Fortunately I was waring a helmet so only suffered mild concussion rather than something worse.

I cycle to work and always wear a helmet. As I do shift work I ride at night as well and the helmet has a light on the front and back of it so other road users can see me.

The last time I rode to work i had a Clio full of idiots overtake me then cut right across me to turn left. I had to lock up the rear and go up the kerb to avoid them and all they did was enter the dead queue of traffic 50yds ahead for the lights.

I always keep an eye out for cyclists but I am amazed by some of the stupidity of some of the courier cyclists and novices that cut down the middle of the roads nipping into blind spots, cutting through red lights, hopping onto pavements and then getting shirty with cars that are following the rules of the road.
