hi everyone. Finally got my vse tdv8 and i am really chuffed with it. there are a couple of 'noises' i wondered if a fellow owner could confirm are normal. the first one is a high pitched very metallic sounding whine (not the turbos - noticably louder) when the car is under heavy type acceleration. the second is a low pitched moan around 2k rpm with a feel of mild vibration coming from infront of the bulkhead when under medium + load.

sorry if i sound like a numbty! this is my first rangie - its still under lr warranty so i want to make sure i get any probs sorted before its me paying the bills!

I too have the second of these noises - i.e. a low pitched moan/groan when engine under load between 2000 and 3000 rpm. This is also accompanied by a mild vibration coming up through the pedals, drivers footwell, bulkhead. This is not really noticeable below 1900/2000 rpm and above 3000 rpm.

Am going to get the fluids changed (gearbox, transfer box, front diff) to see if that helps - probably worth it anyway on a 07MY TDV8 (ZF 'box I think?) at 57k miles, no?

There also seems to be a bit of a "bump/thump" when changing from 1st to 2nd under medium to high throttle and another that sometimes happens when you are accelerating under medium throttle and then lift close to the gear change point.

Also, just occasionally, the gear changes seem a little random/non-linear, almost exclusively under medium or low throttle settings - i.e. doesn't step down for a few secs with 60/70% throttle input when at low revs in a high gear or changes down then up again within a short space of time. Almost as if the 'box doesn't know what gear it should be in / getting a bit confused. Sometimes also get this "confusion" after a period of spirited driving with large throttle openings followed by total lift off followed by large throttle opening when in "D" as opposed to "S".

Thoughts so far are:

1. All above are normal behaviour, not to worry.
2. Gearbox, transfer box or front diff on the way out
3. Trans fluids need changing
4. I have only done circa 5k miles in the car - maybe the 'box is still "learining" my driving style, which may be different from the previous owner's


Any help/guidance/thoughts/observations on the above much appreciated!!

Most of those issues can be easily fixed by loading updated calibration software (via IDS) for the TCM and ECM (transmission control module and engine control module).

I did this a while back and had similar issues and they have all gobe.

That is interesting.

I have had the transmission update done and changed the gearbox and diff fluids (no problems with oil quality) that did improve (although not totally extinguish) most of the transmission 'bump' and gear 'hunting' issues I mentioned above however the groaning noise and vibration at 2k to 2.5k revs is still there and has got worse. Is it this that you were referring to when you said that it was cured by an ECM update?

Possibly loose heatshield? I'm not sure if there any - but that would be roughly where they are (if they exist!). The only other thing that groans is the FBH (this will cut in at temps below 16 I think), and is there to assist in bringing the coolant up to temperature (and providing a means to heat the cabin!).

Definitely not the FBH. I know that groaning. This is different. More of a drone than a groan (if that is not too subjective!). And, as you say, the FBH noise goes away when everything is up to temp.

If anything, my symptoms aren't there to begin with (i.e. when cold) and only become very evident when you have been driving for a bit and everything is fully warmed up.

Doubt it is a loose heat shield either. I think it would be a higher pitched, more 'tinkly' sound if that was it. This sounds more engine (possibly mounts?) / drivetrain related to me. -----------------------------------------------

No. Only under medium or high throttle input when transmission is engaged. I.e. drivetrain under load. -----------------------------------------------

Indeed. But which part is the question. And what to do about it!

It has been like that now for nearly 20k miles. If it was the gearbox or torque converter about to go pop, surely that would have happened by now.

FYI, current mileage is about 76k. -----------------------------------------------
