Hi mate,

Here is an example of what you are looking for ;

You need to be looking for a BMW unit, from an E39 5 series or an X5. Its made by Lear.

I got mine from a 2005 X5.

Don't look for anything "Land Rover" as it won't work.

Land Rover never fitted a digital tv to our cars.

Hope this helps.

There's a list of appropriate BMW part #'s for TV tuners floating around the forum. I've posted it more than once and others have posted it as well.

What years of E39 were they in, and where were they hidden? I'm starting to see E39s popping up in my local scrappy now, and anything that's not metal is either a fiver or free. Laughing

Hi mate,

Not at home till later, for a more exhaustive search, but the BMW will need to have a screen like ours ;

and I think in the E39 its in a compartment in the boot.

I think the 2004 onwards cars had them, so it may have to be an X5.

I used a 2005 X5 and that had one.

Not 100% sure when they stopped making the E39 to be honest. Maybe it just missed the hybrid tuner.

Worth a check though.

The 3 series also had it.

So long as the screen looks like ours, with the buttons, and as late as possible, worth a look.

Will try and firm up years later.

Cheers

The E39 was built till 04. But I assume that TV tuners are not going to be very common in the UK as they aren't in the Mutterland of BMW. And if you can find one from a scrapyard, you'd have to find an idiot of a scrapyard owner too or you'll likely pay more than on ebay - which is where I'd look primarily. If you're feeling adventurous, try ebay.de. They used to be somewhat cheaper there (I haven't looked in a while).

Do look up the PN list so you know what you are getting.

Harsh. My local scrappy works on the low profit, high turnover model. If you pay 100 quid for every car that comes through the gates, charge a tenner for a battery/alternator/starter and between fifty and a hundred for an engine, you can afford to be fairly blase about trim bits, stereos and the like as you're pretty much in profit from the start.

A BMW forum seems to suggest that cars from a 54 plate have digital TV. Though some say 2005...........The screen will have to be like ours, as I mentioned above, and I'm not sure when they changed systems ;

http://www.bmwland.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=118126

It will have to be a very late E39 then, or and X5 or 3 series then.

I was able to try the one I got, in the X5 to ensure it worked. Then I swapped out.

In the X5 though, it is buried way down under the boot, underneath the spare wheel. Quite a lot of strip down to get to it.

There is a big write up here, which details a Sirius install in an X5, the stripdown description describes how to get to the TV unit in the boot, as he fits the Sirius in the same frame..

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/stereo...ation.html

There is a company here with one. I'd check by calling them before actually ordering......not cheap though £500.......

is it really worth the expense of having a tv working in your range....for £500, you could buy a decent big screen telly for home...i cant see the attraction of it tbh.. ... - .- -.

Have to agree with Stan on this...I have TV in mine as standard and unless you are in a decent reception area you get very few channels, If it were an option it's one I would avoid Sad

Admittedly, the "OEM" route is not the cheapest, but is fully integrated.........I paid £150 from a friendly car dealer, who owed me a favour.

To be fair, I only favoured OEM as I didn't want extra aerials on the windows, but some companies now offer a digital tuner upgrade for around £140 upwards and give the option of having the aerials hidden, for approx another £60, so would be a nicer look.

Would have extra AV inputs etc, so may be cheaper and more flexible in the long run ?
