How much the car should you afford?

Curiouly, on some other forum I found, some say the price of the car you buy should be the 2 year of whole family Pure income---that means 2 years * (you and your parter's total income - mortgage- any other living expensive). what you guys think? and fianancially speaking what you guys think?

There is a formula used car manufacturers to decide how much we are willing to pay for a car and it is somthing I would consider silly as X-Box describes.
At the end of the day we all have an amount we are willing to pay for an individual vehicle and a absolute price we are willing to pay out, for me at the moment its about £18k I could afford more but I cant justify paying more than that for any vehicle. So if you want a FF you have to try buy the best you can get for that but that rule applies to a mondeo or a mini. Not that I would pay £18k for any mondeo even a new one Whistle Mine was a blue one! Smile

If the average income is 25k, then that would mean a 50k car.... I don't think so.. Shocked Previously..

2 x (net pay - bills/expenses), not 2 x gross pay.....

so assuming £25k gross income (£19k net), roughly £1k/mnth in bills/living costs, that works out at a car value of roughly £14k, not £50k....

Sounds reasonable enough at this level, but the formula gets stupid when you're talking of family incomes of £60k+....I know a few like that and not many drive around in £30k+ cars...

I think its on gross pay I know its a ridiculous figure when I first heard about how they work it out a few years ago. Still think they are in cloud cuckoo land. Surprised Mine was a blue one! Smile

There is NO WAY I'm paying that much for a car.

Used to be, a reasonable home price, what was considered "affordable" was 3x gross annual income.

We bought a new (to us) house 3 years ago.
Talked to the bankster guy about a mortgage.
He approved us for (at that time) 6x annual income.

I told him we were looking at something more modest.
He said, "oh no, you should buy the biggest house you can!"

Got a mortgage from someone else, since he didn't seem to listen to anything I said. Jim

Is that assuming you'll only buy one car?

We have 4, so I guess we're goosed. Laughing

I think the formula also takes into account 'mainstream' cars and 'mainstream' running costs. My 300Tdi Defender is absorbing a lot of funds right now due to 'enthusiast' changes. It doesn't follow convention.

I also fully support what Sir RRV said. Si. <This is my name.

Also what should your car/cars be worth in relation to your property ?

You see some very grand houses with old bangers parked in the drive, but you also see some property where the car must be worth more than the house Confused
