My understanding is that, whether you're an employee, self-employed or a company director, you can't claim travelling to work as a deductible expense.

It depends on your "place of work" really. If you are contracted as a work from home employee, and your employer has requested you be on-site, then technically you can claim expenses from your employer. As a self-employed person it depends on the contract you have. If you are travelling to a client site then that can be claimed as mileage from your company. It does save a little tax, but it's nothing amazing.

As a contractor you are allowed to claim up to 18 months I believe as after that it is deemed to become your permanent place of work (and therefore not claimable) Ash

can't be claimed for if your an employee and it's your usual place of work.
