New Full Fat - tow bar recommendations please

One thing I do need is a tow bar. As it will be primarily for sticking a cycle rack on every now and again, it needs to be a removable one that looks as neat as possible when not in use. Any recommendations please?

http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/product_re...e=01/09/06 can come and fit them for about £500, but it looks a bit big and cumbersome.

Or there is http:http://www.towbarexpress.co.uk/products.html which seem quite a good set up.

Any other options gratefully considered. Land Rover quoted over £1000! I was hoping for about £300.

I know there has been a recent post on this where it was suggested that it may not be the most cost effective way of transporting kids bikes but, at least if I have a good idea then I can make a call.

Someone also mentioned a site sponsor, Duckworth, who does such things. I tried the search but it came up with 700 odd links. Does anyone have a direct link please?

Oem is a witter bar comes in two types, detachable and flange.

The flange bar should be suitable for you and is cheaper, the bar fits into a sub assembly on the car (you will need this fitting for either) and can be fitted and removed as required by removing a couple of pins, and for occasional use will leave the rear end neater than the oem deatachable. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

OEM is Westfalia, this link will show you the bits of metalwork that you need. You can add in the electrics through these guys but IIRC Dan (Duckworths) may be able to do better for the wiring loom. I believe that you want the Landrover loom as it is pretty much plug and play and should stop your rear parking sensors etc when a light board or trailer is plugged into it. Thumbs Up

This will give you the removable bar which just leaves a receiver visible when not being used. Alternatively you could go for the same armature but with the 'farmer's' multi-height bar which can also be removed when not in use. Downside to the farmers fitting is that it can 'clank' if you leave it in when not in use and if you do remove it - it takes up 1/4 of your boot space. The one in the link will fit into a special holder in the right hand side of the boot space where you probably have a storage bin at the moment. The holder should be supplied with the kit and even comes with the bolts to hold it in place Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

^^^^ sorry thats what i meant. Must have been having a moment....

I have the westfalia detachable with the stowage tub in the boot, it is neat but the reciever does stick out a bit, if you went for the farmers/flange type bar then you will only Leave the sub frame and it will give more options re bike racks though storing it will be more problematic as said. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for the info guys.

It WILL be detached 99% of the time, so it needs to look as neat as possible without the tow ball attached.

Stowage of the tow bar section not a problem as I wouldn't keep it in the car, but custom fitting in the side pocket sounds quite neat.

Would you know where I might see a shot of both types with tow ball off and tow ball on?

I would be looking for someone to fit the whole lot in one go.

The farmers hitch type is very neat when removed as the hole s filled with a plastic plug and is almost invisible. It also fits in the side "bin" in the boot. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Both OEM variants start with a receiver, but in the UK it's actually 50mm an not 2" (52mm).

The 'farmers' slides in receiver style and can be secured by a pin or a bolt. The 'detachable' style has a bespoke 2 part assemby - one part bolts into the receiver and the detachable bit fastens to it.

I've had both and prefer the farmers - as already stated, it looks much neater when removed - the down side is that when used with a pin, it can rattle a bit.

That 5 second video on that page link looks just what i want, but my head is spinning about who to use for supply and fit.

Ideally I want one that can be supplied and fitted as a one stop shop, but I can't justify spending over £500 just on a tow ball for a bike rack a few times a year.

Duckworth's sent me a supply only quote for the parts and that came to £750 without electrics!
