So it's doing it more often now, going into neutral before picking up again after a quick slowdown particularly with some lock on - roundabouts! The IIDTool actually says up down switching fault whatever that is. It does seem to clear and drive normally although interestingly Sport mode can't be selected - you can move the stick across but the car stays in drive. This actually fixes itself after a restart - needless to say dealer can't replicate - anyone had similar or got any ideas Geoff

Out of interest, when I lose drive there is no gear indicated on the dash. It goes completely blank, not even showing D, S etc. does anyone else have the same symptom or am I looking at a different problem?

Well I found the gearbox and after at first trying this fix with my long arms and a mirror - couldn't fit my fat frame under the car- I nipped round to a mates house who has trolley jack and axle stands and got going with the WD40 followed by Lithium grease. He knows stuff and says not to use copper grease on linkages, I don't know stuff so slapped on the general purpose Lithium based grease I took round.
Drive home - try as I may I couldn't get the car to misbehave so maybe job done

It is intermittent so I'll give it a week and report back.  Geoff

Jury is of course still out on this fix but as it costs virtually nothing and takes 10 minutes it falls into the category of preventative maintenance.
As soon as I mentioned "gearbox issues" on this forum lots of panic buttons pressed and many suggestions made as to how I might spend money and how I was ultimately doomed and would certainly have to buy a new gearbox - all, I think, based on problems with the 5 speed.
Interestingly the D3 forum has a lot more on this subject as the 6 speed is in the TDV6 et al and this is where this fix originated.
As I say it's early days but promising so far - fingers crossed  Geoff

It would seem that the problem I had with the car dropping into neutral for a second when slowing, turning and accelerating I.e. roundabouts where you don't stop or bends on winding roads is fixed thanks to this site and the wiki that suggests lubricating and greasing the linkage on the side of the auto box.

Thanks to all who offered advice but I'm pleased to report that none of the more expensive (in some cases much more expensive ) remedies were required. Greasing this linkage should be part of any service - so if you've got a TDV8 and the gearbox is playing up as described above (or similar) this is the first thing you should try its free takes 10 minutes some WD40 and some grease and it worked for me  Geoff

Just had the same issue on my SC fixed by my indy.

Needed new linkage and bush but still a nice cheap fix.

Might be worth asking garages to lube it up as a matter of course during any service. ShOuld be cheap... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just picked my car up from the garage having had this issue fixed.

They stripped down the linkage and found the pivot bush to be shot per Stan's link. Common on Disco's but relatively rare on FF's...

Done under warranty for me but they showed me the invoice which was only for £50 odd.

All good
