arsing about with the inside tailgate and wondered what this was , so prised it out and found it was connected to some wire of some sort , thought it can't be to unlock the tailgate when closed coz you can't get access to it ….

Its the manual tailgate release i think Mine was a blue one! |

thats correct it is the manual release for the upper tailgate, the manual release for the fuel cap it in the fuse box compartment in the boot

You get access to it by pushing down fairly hard on the plastic bit on the rear edge of the parcel shelf, and then easing it towards you.
