Is he being robbed?

A friend of mine had the gearbox pack up on his TD6 at the weekend. He's had it relayed to his local independent who services it for him... How much do you think for a replacement gearbox (fitted)?

£4600+.... Seems a bit steep to me - guy assures him it's a genuine box from RR with 12 months warranty (but probably 12,000 miles - like all recons I suspect)...

If it's a new box and not a recon, will it still have the soft valve block problem?

sounds a lot to me, my D2 had one in for about £1200 and I heard of a FF having one done last year for about £2500... can you give a hint to the indy? or is that against the rules? cheers

I can't give too much of a hint as I don't know them myself - All I know is that they are somewhere near Rainham in Essex. Also when they last had it for a service they backed it into a pillar, and allegedly changed the gearbox oil...

It's local to him!

I use a guy called Jason - he comes to the house to do any work that I don't fancy doing and is really good value.

had my 4.4's box rebuild a few years back by Mackie transmissions in glasgow. top quality job. cost about £2700 all in. I think the Td6 box was a couple of hundred quid more. £4600 seems steep unless its a 100% new box. V8 or else ...

Allegedly a new box - my concern there is that it might not have the better modified valve block.

It sounds par for the course if they went to LR and bought a new box. And that is a rather silly way of going about fixing a transmission in a car only worth about twice to 3 times that at best, IMO.

It will not have an uprated valve body if it is a new OEM box. But it will be new and not refurbed, so it should last another 100k miles.

1200-1500 is too little for a box with an uprated valve body, btw. Even with trained monkeys doing the work free... Razz

£1600.00 for a replacement, from an Indi.

Of the 5 that I got through on my TD6 4 came from Land Rover and were reconditioned, not new!

Cheers Paul - both of you!

My thoughts were that it's too much money for a car with 140,000 miles on it, and that a decent recon (from a specialist) might last longer than a new box - and possibly cost a little less.

I don't have any feedback on, or make any recommendation for, this Indy other than they serviced and MOTd my car recently and they seemed OK (but thats hardly rocket science).

It's just to give an indication of the going rate which might be useful to you Whistle Geoff

How do you get one with the updated valve body ? If that makes any sense ?

If I have any issues, I'd want the replacement box not to have the same issues as the original unit..........

Cheers
