I can only give you my experience, I PMd Phil with a full explanation of my trouble and he replied equally fully a week or so later - nice bloke.

He couldn't actually help me as his experience is mainly those 5 speed boxes made of cheese Whistle (TD6) but gave me some pointers. I assume that he is in some demand because in the world of the blind the one eyed man is king and as my old school moto said "Knowledge is strength" it probably makes you popular as well.

before anyone kicks off "cheese" comment was a joke, just like the gearbox - oops there I go again Embarassed ! Geoff

Apologies for not replying sooner – I’m just back from a few days away in sunny Bath

Regarding your GM 5L40-E transmission problems :

So we know that these transmissions generally fail at between 80,000 and 100,000 miles in the TD6 Range Rover

The failure is usually brought about by the torque converter lock-up clutch wearing through its friction lining and the subsequent metal-to-metal contact dumping a load of metallic debris into the sump causing the already ailing transmissions to finally give up the ghost

This can often be accompanied by other clutch failures in the transmission

all caused by overheating through slip due to reduced clutch actuation pressures because the three ‘valve blocks’ which contain the spools and solenoids, which control the hydraulic system, wear over time, allowing the spools to leak and therefore lose pressure and cross-talk (SteveMFr has posted information on this in the past)

The fact that this transmission started life in BMWs using Dexron III fluid, which subsequently changed to Texamatic 7045E in the L322 and then ETL 8072B in the later BMWs and now finally Dexron VI (though 7045E is still Land Rover's recommendation) could be seen as an attempt to tweak the formulation of the fluid to reduce this premature wear in the aluminium blocks

I am very wary of ‘re-manufactured’ L322 5L40-E transmissions. Did they simply re-manufacture the torque converter to fix the worn LUC, replace any other failed components, clean everything out and stick the transmission back together again? If so, they haven’t fixed the root cause because the clutch control pressures will still be low as the re-used valve blocks are still worn and the whole cycle will start again – but quicker this time. Maybe not quick enough, though, that the re-manufacturer manages to get through his warranty period first!

The only lasting cure is either to replace the blocks with new ones or to fit the Sonnax kits

So, in my opinion, with this transmission you can’t change the fluid frequently enough and, at the same time, you need to be checking carefully for signs of metallic debris in the old fluid. Unfortunately, even frequent fluid changes won’t prevent the inevitable but it may fend it off for a while

P.S. the 'corrugated rumble' you describe is the torque converter lock-up clutch not functioning correctly in its 'continuous slip' mode which prevents the torque converter from absorbing the torsional vibrations from the engine allowing them to pass through the driveline

You could start your own geabox problem post here on the forum and maybe others can help you as well, there is a lot of experience on here by now Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

On a serious note could the newer reccomended fluids be used in the FF GM box to help extend its life as we know the Texaco fluid is silly silly money i do wonder abut the costs of the others??

IE 20litres of the Dex VI is around £70-80... Good for a proper change as you can then do 2 partial flushes at least if not 3... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

Clearly automatic transmission fluid technology will have moved on in the last 13 years and you would expect that Dexron VI would be an improvement over Dexron III (the ‘official’ TD6 transmission fluid)

My personal opinion – if I had a TD6 I would treat it to frequent changes of Dexron VI
