About 18 months ago on the last service - is that a known issue (he said very very hopefully...) ? |

I pulled into a lay by and blipped the throttle last night (it revved ok) - the problem manifested itself when in gear, I couldn't get revs to rise .. |

Fuel pump is my guess, there are several, and if one fails you'll have vastly reduced fuel pressure which would account for the inability to build up revs. Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining! |

Ok thanks - I think that I'll have to get the recovery truck round and let the main dealer have a look - I didn't bring enough tools out with me to change fuel pumps!

This sounds a strangely familiar story. Some years back my P38 refused to start on a trip to Switzerland. The main dealrrs could not look at it for three weeks so I had it repatriated by the breakdown insurance company. That took about 10 days and our local indy took 25 mins to diagnose and fix!
