Can the front Glass on an IP4 be replaced

Somehow SWMBO'd has cracked the screen on her IP4 , not sure if it is still under warranty as the phone had not been dropped or such the crack on the screen eminates from the round lock/unlock button on the bottom , anyhow question being can this be replaced okay if not covered by warranty , can the glass front be bought outside Apple ....

Make up an excuse that it keeps freezing etc and then act dumb if they ask about the crack. If it's not particularly noticeable, chances are they won't notice either!

Hmph! iPhone is VERY slippery and doesn't work well when you're in a rush with it in your top shirt pocket.

As I understand it the front screen and digitizer are one part and most of the components have to be removed to access.

Truth is there are a lot of screws of varying lengths which need to be removed and replaced in the same holes.

I think you can pay £130-£150 for an 'out of warranty service visit' to an Apple store and they basically swap it for a refurbed one.

I would change the screen as it only really takes a pentalobe screwdriver(which I have) and patience/time (which I don't at the moment) so I will probably swap it.

I've also heard horror stories about people causing a short removing the battery which makes the phone reboot a lot.

Hope it helps!

Thumbs Up

It happened to me - I did all the research & decided the best way to go was with Apple themselves - I can't remeber the exact cost but it was between £100 & £150. The advantage is that you don't need to wait - they give you a new handset its warranted and you know it's a top class repair.

I booked my 'Genius' appointment at the local Apple store - the 'Genius' informed me that it wasn't covered under warranty - which I knew - then he told me that in this instance he would replace the phone for free.....

No reason given & I didn't like to ask - I had bought the phone on eBay - we have 4 iPhones & and iPad on the account - so not the biggest customer by any stretch.

Having talked to some other people - that's not uncommon - but also not universal - certainly worth going in for a quote if you live anywhere close to a store.

my sons teacher confiscated his iphone 4 but dropped it and cracked the front screen... long story short the school said they would pay the £139 to get it sorted at the genius bar at apple ...when the story was explained to the apple bloke he decided not to charge ...apparently the stores have a certain amount of 'free of charges' they can do...worth a try mick.. ... - .- -.

I met someone at one of the accounts I visit. They had their iphone 3GS smashed screen repaired for around £30 at a independent mobile shop. I can't see it being anymore expensive for the IP4.

Worth while asking around?

If they charge ridiculous money, just go into one of those shops that repair and unlock phones or buy the part off eBay. I have had to buy the speaker on ebay cause my toddler chews and drools all over my phone and now my loudspeaker is Censored they send u the tools and all. It's a genuine part for £1.40..! Thumbs Up

iphone 4 screens are bonded on, unlike the 3g/3gs ones which are stuck with glue and the screens on these are very easy to do , i've done a few for my boys mishaps........

the genius bar gives you a refurbished or new phone for your broken one and it will be an unlocked one at that.. ... - .- -.

Black ones are better though mick as they go with more clothing items Wink

Best thing anyone with such a device can do is invest £20 in an otter box defender.

i have one for my iPod touch 4g and its been dropped, soaked, and properly abused and all i need to do is take it out of the rubber and then plastic case and clean the cases! It still has the delivery protector over the screen and camera and the rear metal panel is scratch free and it works like a charm.

it often gets soaked when in my pocket riding to work or if listening in the shower and has been dropped from said pocket or car when getting out and the case looks proper abused now but the iPod is mint inside and works a real charm. You can get them in different colors i think if you buy them direct but armed forces use them and so do most polisce 'services' for blackberry and droid devices and iphones where allowed Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Bit Late I know but changing it is fairly easy so long as you get the glass & digitizer package.

Off eBay I think it was £30ish and took me 30 mins at lunch.

Most kit suppliers even give you the tools to do the change (albeit they are cr*p quality tools).

Have a look on YouTube at the instructions and it really is fairly easy so long as you do it on a clean flat surface as the screws are small.

Hope this helps

Screen can easily be replaced. It is one unit (glass, LCD and home button) which makes it even easier than the 3GS etc. if your phone is older it will have philips screws, if it is newer then the pentalobe screws. Either way the vendors on eBay usually send both with the replacement parts. Look at ifixit.com for a simple guide to replacing any parts.

Screen is about £30 and will take about 30 minutes to replace Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
