it's a load of Censored Censored

Been there and avoided being robbed!

Mothercare are the best and quite sensible about car seats. I suspect all the cars you have have ISOfix mounts - this means you can get a plastic bottom bit that clips to the standard (hence ISOFIX - not car specific) mounts in each car and a seat unit (often part of a push chair arrangement/pram) that will just then clip onto the base in each car.

The other option is the standard approach that we use (daughter aged two and baby daughter aged 9 months) is the standard seats - baby has thing on the pram base (MY Three from Mothercare) that comes off the pram and goes in the car (like Captain Scarlet) facing backwards with the seatbelt around and across it. The 2 year old has a seat from Halfords (this one http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...Id_165763) that is held in by the seatbelt threading through the seat base - jolly quick to get in and out.

ISOFIX is overpriced and no better than a good seat properly attached with seat belts - look at Britax seats and just get one that will fit all vehicles. No need to spend silly money.

We had seats that fitted the kids from about 9 months to 3 years, after that they were in slightly different seats. Prior to 9 months they were in a little baby carrier that was a universal fitting (i.e. seat belts ) and easily transferred from car to car.

Jesus Dan!!! How Censored much for a baby carrier!! Does the Land Rover logo really add £200 to the price??

Mick, these are the styles of seats you will be needing down the line. Baby carrier to start, then a stage 1-3 seat (much cheaper from Britax by the way) and then eventually a high-backed booster seat

Mick,

Me and the wife are expecting May timeframe.

Pramwise we went with a Maxi-Cosi Mura 3 thing ( buggy seat + carrycot doodah ) and bought the Maxi-cosi Pebble baby car seat. The buggy seat, baby seat and cot all clip on and off the frame in seconds.

Car seat wise ... we went with the Pebble cause of its integration with the Mura 3 frame. We're not going to bother at the moment with the ISOfix base and see how things go. For the time it takes to swap the ISO base between cars in order that you can clip the baby seat into it, you can have the seat belt wrapped around the baby seat.

Regarding the car specific thing: A lady once told us that whilst some cars may have the isofix mounts on the seat, the pole that goes down the floor needs checked to see whether the car floor can take it. Apparently its not meant to push down on places which dont have enough support, or have wires running under that area. ( She mentioned some Renaults fall fowl of this and it can be checked up on on the web ) It may be this aspect that the lady is referring to regarding car specific seats.

I've not really looked at the larger car seats for beyond the baby seat stage just yet. I figured there are other things to worry about first.

Couple of other thoughts:

- There was a thread on here not long ago about seat protector mats which sit between the base of the baby seat and the car seat itself. Halfords do them apparently. I'll be looking to get one of them for each of the cars to protect the leather on the rear seats of them.

- We have horses. We've bought a cheap second hard Mura 3 buggy seat + chassis to stay up at the farm. That way, we just need to lift the baby seat ( or wean when its bigger ) out of the car, and clip it into the buggy/chassis at the farm. The buggy can then get covered in all the crap from the farm, and not have to come into the car afterwards. It cost about £100 on gumtree , and will get sold later on for probably a similar amount. That will also help cause our other car is a mini ( yeah ... really suitable ... i'm trying to convince her to change ... she's not having it ) and means we wont have to take the buggy in the mini either. V8 or else ...

I've got twins on the way so have done a bit of research.

My advice is this - an ISOFIX model does mean that you can them in more cars, and in an ideal world get one that plugs into a buggy.

However.

Look at the second hand ones - the first 6 months means you need a group 0, we needed at least 2, ideally 4. Picked up two BMW group zero ISOFIX seats on 'netmums', one for £80, and one for a fiver.

Will be able to keep the bases and get a new seat for it once they grow out of it. __________________

Go for a Maxi Cosi or a Britax Car seat.

The Isofix bases can be found for very little on the "bay" or gumtree ... we just bought the cheap second hand base. Up to you whethert you are happy to go for a 2nd hand car seat or you want a new one. But a 2nd hand one can be had for as little as 30-40 quid in almost new condition - a new one will set you back 120 quid plus another 100 for the base.

We got a Maxi Cosi that just clicked into the base in the car (saved having to fumble around with seatbelts everytime and the same seat also clipped onto the buggy (a 3 Wheel City Mini) so the lil bubba wasnt disturbed if he had fallen asleep in the car ... we also just carried the car seat for short trips in and out of the house etc.

Mothercare give good advice. You can also go to John Lewis and get a free baby tour which is quite good ... Now that the lil guy is older, he has his very own Ferrari forward facing car seat ... and that was even cheaper than the Maxi Cosi on the "bay". Laughing African Bush Junkie ... in London!

We had a Safety 1st for the first year and that was OK. We didn't have the choice of looking for the best at the time. I'd always look for the best tested by the Dutch AA and Consumer organization. So the one we use now is a Kiddy Guardian Pro as it is supposedly the best available at the moment. And I have to say it looks like it should work very well and our little one loves to sit in it. I strongly recommend it as it will last till she is 5 (you can extend it as they grow).

Both the seats use the safety belts so fit in all cars. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

My year-old baby daughter uses the same Britax car seat that her 9 year-old brother used when he was a baby.

We have two identical seats. They're the 3-in-1 models that go from about 9 months to booster seat.

They've been in all our cars and even fit in our Series 3 LR with static belts. We've had a lot of cars and many makes and have never had a fitting problem.

No problem in my RR at all. I take the seat out if I know I'll not need it for a few days to give the leather a chance to recover. Si. <This is my name.

All these posts and no-one's even said congratulations Shocked You got more respect out of these guys for hitting the 6k post mark Laughing

All of the car seat manufacturers have a list of supposedly "approved" vehicles on their websites however all this means in reality is a list of vehicles they have tried the seat in. It doesn't mean that they cannot be installed.

ISOFIX is just a complete rip off - we tries both with and without and the "conventional" seat belt fitted seats seemed to be superior in many ways to the ISOFIX ones that were twice the price.

Also wouldn't recommend 2nd hand seat - you never know their history and I'd never take that risk just to save a few quid.....Even a small shunt and its recommended to replace the seats, same as bike helmets as critical damage can go unseen.

You also don't actually need to get a group 0 from birth. We went with a group 0+ (Britax First Class Plus http://www.britax.co.uk/car-seats/car-seats/first-class-plus) that is installed rear facing for birth - 9 months then you remove the "infant" insert to create the proper seat and turn forward facing from 9 mths till 18kg or 4 years old. It was the same price as the normal Group 1 seats but meant we only needed to buy one and therefore saved a couple hundred quid.

Friends and family had tried the separate group 0 infant style carry jobs that only lasted them about 6 months and then they had to buy another proper seat anyway as the bub had outgrown the old one, so forked out a heap of dosh for something that lasted no time at all then needed to be homed in the attic/garage for "the next one".

The seat we bought is now 3 years old and is still perfect - it will be used again when No.2 turns up this summer. The only disadvantage is that the bairn needs to be lifted out of the seat to get it out of the car which can be fun if they are sleeping, but not a huge problem.

Fair enough if you want a system that plugs into a frame/travel system to become a buggy, but what do you do when they hit 6-9 months and you need to splash out on a whole new set of kit as they don't fit in it anymore? In addition, the infant style carry ones are not ideal if you are going to be out and about with a very young pup in teh buggy as they don't lie perfectly flat (which is bad, so my wife tells me...)

Also, as nice as some of the all-in-one "travel systems" look, they can be a big PITA and nowhere near as functional in day to day use as a proper seat and separate proper buggy (with a FF and an ML in your stable, there's plenty of boot space to hide them in Very Happy ).

We followed the same philosophy and got a "proper" buggy (iCandy Apple http://www.icandyuk.com/products.php?id=apple) that came with a carrycot for very young, then a seat which could be set both forward and rearward facing, fully reclined etc. It has outlasted any of the "travel systems" our friends have had both in durability and also comfort due to decent size, design and build quality. In fact, 2 of the wife's colleagues went and bought the same within weeks of seeing ours. It also is in a perfect state for recycling for mini Craven 2 this summer.

And if the worst Question should happen, you can buy a "Pear" system (http://www.icandyworld.com/uk/en/products/apple_pear_upgrade that converts the buggy to carry 2 gremlins!!
