Go for a Maxi Cosi or a Britax Car seat.

We had a Safety 1st for the first year and that was OK. We didn't have the choice of looking for the best at the time. I'd always look for the best tested by the Dutch AA and Consumer organization. So the one we use now is a Kiddy Guardian Pro as it is supposedly the best available at the moment. And I have to say it looks like it should work very well and our little one loves to sit in it. I strongly recommend it as it will last till she is 5 (you can extend it as they grow).

My year-old baby daughter uses the same Britax car seat that her 9 year-old brother used when he was a baby.
