the best is whatever you can afford...some have reported that super-unleaded has given them a few extra mpg but for the extra cost it cancels out..

you now get to the argument ,is supermarket petrol better than the service station stuff ..in my opinion it dont make a difference and i use the cheapest....

The best petrol is the cheapest you can buy without going out of your way to do so - otherwise you cancel out the couple of quid saved on a tankful!

thanks guys i have always ran with super but my wife puts in normal ( cheaper option ) Laughing but as ive just bought this last month i was just woundering as the x5 i had seemed to have some fault with the ecu over the mixing of fuels ??? if this is correct... it was the 4.4 v8 x5, i just wanted to check as i think the last owner just used normal and i didnt want to go through the same problems on this.

I have a liking for Shell V-Power.

It helps that there's a small village Shell station a 1/4 mile from my house.

I do also like BP Ultimate, but for minor distance and convenience reasons it's mostly uneconomic to use it.

Never used anything but V-Power in my FFRR, so can't accurately comment on any benefits. I know EVOEng (previous owner) used it as well. And my E55 likes it.

Not a fan of supermarket fuel. And it's further away from my normal routes, so isn't dramatically cheaper. Si. <This is my name.

I eat rat poison.

Shouldn't really make a difference tbh imho. The engine ECU's constantly bring the timing forward to the point of knocking, then back it off again a tiny amount so it doesn't knock, whilst also measuring the burnt fuel mix on the exhausts and all the other measurements around the fuel.

A difference of fuel between normal and super shouldn't really cause too much of a headache for and ECU to adapt. My 4.4 quite happily swaps between petrol and LPG which I would say have a difference of properties greater than the difference of super and normal unleaded. V8 or else ...

@fisha

While you are right about the fuels burning differently, to the on-board ECU's it shouldn't make a lot of difference. When the LPG computer is set up, the installer (should) try to ensure that the metering information sent back to the car ECUs remains as constant as possible. So if tickover (for example) calls for a 5% injection opening cycle on petrol, he will set the LPG computer to open the LPG injectors for as long as they need to maintain the constant tickover based on a demand for 5% from the car.

Beware that super cheap supermarket fuel can be poor quality and sourced from cheapest seller including bottom of the tank rubbish....

I find Shell the best combo of quality & price in our area. Thumbs Up

Gaz:

Common misconception - all fuel is drawn from the bottom of the tank! They don't just poke a hose in the top and skim off the fuel for the tankers!

All fuel sold in the UK will be at least 95 RON and to BS (and EN standard). The only difference might be the additives - that can be added from a sack by the tanker driver at the time it's filled. But there are only a certain number of refineries in the UK and they all supply fuel to all the fuel companies.

The main difference with supermarket fuel is that it's usually purchased on the spot market and they tend to hang around to get the lowest prices they can, and then often sell at cost (or not much above) as a way of drawing you into the shops.

You may well be right about the bottom of the tank but I am pretty sure that Shell, BP, Texaco etc and Asda/tesco/sainbury fuel are of a slightly differing quality when it comes out of the pump.

I appreciate the difference is expensive additives but I believe these make a difference Thumbs Up

You may be correct - to a certain extent!

The additives are different - or absent in Supermarket fuel!

Having said that, my 4.4 V8 runs fine on anything - I'm sure it would run on Creosote if I could get it cheap enough!

I agree with Simes 100%, only difference is the additives that are differenct between Shell, BP, tesco, etc

You would only see a noticeable performance difference between standard and super unleaded in a tuned engine eg supercharged as forced induction causes an earlier knock, which the higher octane rating compensates for 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
