What to expect if i put 20" wheels on

I have just been given 4 RANGE ROVER 20" BBS ALLOY WHEEL'S which require refurbishing, before i go to the expense of the refurb and bigger tyres, how will these wheels effect the driving experience.

Presently on 18" wheels

I appreciate the speedo will be slightly out, but will they rub when i lower the suspension, something i have to do every time to allow aging dogs to get in.

What tyre size should i put on, have been looking at General Grabber UHP 255/45 x20 ?

Sorry its a 2003 L322

many thanks Sad

you need 255/50/20 tyres these are the std FFRR size and the same rolling radius as 255/60/18's your speedo will read correct.

Ride will be harsher, you are more likley to damage rims on kerbs or off road and thetyres are more expensive. Handling will be slightly sharper. I prefer the ride of 18 or 19" but 20" probably look better

Nothing should rub and the speedo shouldn't read incorrectly. Provided you use the correct size tyres. 20" wheels should have 50 profile tyres. 19" - 55. 18" - 60 etc. that way you maintain the same rolling diameter.

Having said that, I wouldn't fit 20" wheels if you want the most comfortable ride. Maybe the handling will be slightly better (debatable) but it will have a harsher ride. Also with the bigger wheels you will have a much smaller choice of tyres to fit, and the tyres will cost more.

By the way, I had 20" on the car when I bought it, I recently changed to 19".

Edit: was beaten to the reply there lol No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

As above, but wasn't there also something about a rubber steering damper to reduce stress on the rack?

there were vibration issues on a TD6 with your foot on the brake pedal and the car in drive when waiting at the lights. The solution is to just to take it out of drive.

265/50 and 275/50 will also fit and give you a little more cushion than the standard 255/50. they'll also fit without rubbing.

Realistically, its still a smooth ride a /50 profile is still a considerable amount of tyre wall.... you feel the bumps a little more, but its a long long way from bone shaking that some people put forward.

I've bumped up kerbs ( i do every time I get onto my drive ), I've scuffed along kerbs, and done the farm tracks and haven't kerbed / scratched the alloy as a result of it. V8 or else ...

Taken the first to be refurbished, i try and get the daughter to put some pictures on when i get it back. Have been quoted £40 to refurb.

Thinking of putting two part worns on and two brand new tyres on when their done.

Any views on part worn? Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

I changed from 19" to 20" TBH I can't tell the difference other than the 20" look way better. i think off road it might be better to take off the nice wheels to avoid damage from rocks and such. However, what do I know?, off road is a place I've never been or intend to go Laughing Geoff

I'm no expert but is there a risk of winding up the transmission with unequally worn tyres on front and rear axles, where the circumference will be different?

There is a risk of sorts. The wind up would be in the Torsen centre diff which biases torque to different driveshafts based on rotation speeds of the propshafts ( which themselves are affected by the diameter of the wheels )

IIRC, the diameters of the front and rears have to be within 1% of each other.

So for a typical 255/50/R20, the diameter will be ~755mm

1% diameter difference of that will be 7.5mm ... meaning you can have about 3.5mm difference in tread depth ( cause you have a difference at both sides of the tyre )

So whether to put part worns on or not would be down to how much they have worn down and whether they fall within 3.5mm difference - I would be measuring your tread depth along the centre tread ... the outside edges of RR tyres tend to wear more than the centre tread esp on the front tyres .

--------------

All that being said, you're always going to go beyond that 1% difference in rotation speeds when you go round any reasonable corners as each wheel will be taking a different arc, distance and speed when going round the corner. So its not that the diff cant handle differences of greater than 1%, its just that sustained difference can put undue strain on it. V8 or else ...

Thinking about it.... one of the things I wonder about that whole 1% thing is even if you have the same tyres front and rear ... they are at different pressures ... so dont their effective diameters change due to the squish/bulge at the bottom where it contacts the road? Question V8 or else ...
