Cleaning door and boot hinges

Got a squeaky rear door and want to clean all the grit/crap off them, oil them up and maybe coat them with something, whats best?

Was going to clean them up with a toothbrush and WD40, whats best to put on them once theyre clean?

The toothbrush and WD40 method would work, but you may find the toothbrush bristles too short to get right into the hinge mechanism.

Try an old paintbrush for better penetration and agitation.

WD40 is OK. I've just bought some Autoglym APC (All Purpose Cleaner) and would be tempted to use that in the required concentration. It's not expensive - around £20 for 5 litres undiluted. Spray it on, agitate with the brush, wipe off with a dry cloth until clean (and nice and shiny).

It would be tempting to wax the area as much as possible to make it look as good as it can. Surprising how nice clean hinges look.

I'd then use a white silicon grease in a spray can (the stuff with the thin straw nozzle attachment to spray directly on the hinge parts and not everywhere). You won't need much.

The above words are the ramblings of a bumbling idiot, so any intelligent people who know better please advise. Thumbs Up Si. <This is my name.

Best thing is petrol or white spirit on a cloth then some silicone grease which should coat it and work its way back into the joint Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

A liberal dosing of WD40 should stop the squeaking, but silicone grease for longer lasting protection .

KY Jelly is apparently good for better penetration Whistle

I used spray grease on mine as it clings better than WD40. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE
