Theres probably a full write up somewhere here but basically it can be switched on by remote (if you have one) or by the screen. On settings there is an option to go to 'timed climate' where you can programme a timer like on central heating ie on at a certain time maybe half an hour before you need car in morning, and then off similarly. Or you can press 'manual' which switches it on immediately. It heats the coolant and hence the air coming into the cabin. What I dont know as I rarely use mine even in the chilly climes up here is what areas of the car it heats ie does it blow air through the vents as set up when the car is switched off or somewhere else.
