Hi
I have a 4.4 and get 16 round town. I recently did a 200 mile round trip on the motor way / A road and achieved 21. I wasn't hogging the fast lane but wasn't slow Smile

Thanks

always usefull to get some real world info.

The FFRR would only be a second car and a weekend toy and pulling a caravan, maybe 7,000 miles a year.

I take it the 4.4 and the TD6 make good tow cars for a 1650kg caravan?

I have test driven a 2004, 4.4 and found it to be a nice drive but not as pully at low RPM as I would have liked for towing, might have to try a TD6 and see what that is like.

If you are after a nice clean 4.4 then you should look at Gazellio, he buys the very best cars out there, he has a lovely Autobiography 4.4 right now.

Thanks that one would tick most of the box's of what I need. A little older than I wanted but a good price. It does look mint, might be worth a trip down south.

Hi Cannondale - there is much debate over which is better V8 / Td6 . . . . .

My car's a Td6 which I think is spot on. It's a standard (ie not chipped) car which is very torquey, if not as powerful as the V8. For me, the torque is more important . . . .
MPG's -
23/24 - winter knocking about
25/27 - summer knocking about
Took it to Italy last summer when it returned over 30mpg all the time with the A/C on.
I think a V8 would struggle for that !

Try both - see what you think . . . . .

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

I love the torque of my TD6 (non chipped) and as most of my driving is around town, makes for effortless driving. Pootle around at 30mph and give it some wellie and the torque makes it go like a rocket, amazing for a diesel / heavy car Very Happy

I do the same, next fill up I'm going to try driving a little more spirited, see if I get the same overall miles per tank...
Driving like Miss Daisey gets boring....

Wow.
Our 2005 4.4 gets 16-ish (US) mpg in normal use; mixed highway (60%) & city (40%) driving.
We took it cross-country in December; 3200+ miles, averaged less than 16(US) mpg.

The gas mileage really goes to hell when you're running at 85mph for several hours.
At around 70mph, she was running about 17-18 (US) mpg.
Over 80mph, I was down in the 15 (US) mpg neighborhood.

UK to US MPG conversion:
1 UK gallon = 1.2 US gallon
So you should go 20% further on a gallon than me.
Based on you guys getting 18-19mpg, that pretty much matches me getting 16mpg.

Don't get me started on the perils of cheap gas.
My 2000 just threw a hissy-fit about it.
I'm back to only buying top-tier fuel. Jim

I tow a 1600-1900kg twin axle 'van with my TD6 and haven't really seen it go above 22mpg when towing along nice a roads or mways. As soon as it gets twisty or holly that drops to more like 17mpg Sad the main problem being that it always kicks down even on 1/2 throttle as it can feel the weight but just won't lockup fully if your below 50mph Sad. It's a great tow car though and never really needs pushing past 2.5k revs to move along and the brakes are great though for other reasons I am thinking Of upgrading my fronts to beefier units Smile

I have run mine on BioD nearly exclusively since I bought it and it no longer smokes at all on full power(visible from the mirrors) where as most td6's I've seen kick out a decent bit when booted mine doesn't Smile

Get the best, V8, SC, TD6 you can for your budget and don't worry about the age is the best advice.

Some ffrr's are now well below the £10k mark Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

My TD6 averages about 24mpg with mixed driving. On a run it'll get nearer 28. It sounds like a fecking tractor, although its pretty clean behind even when I boot it. Plus its nice being able to do 500-550 miles between fill ups which you wont get with petrol/lpg.
However, if I went back 14 months with the knowledge I have now I'd go for a nice V8 and lpg it. The V8 is the engine for the car, as where the TD6 was just thrown in there to provide a deisel alternative. It was only when the 3.6 TDV8 was used that it matched the requirements of the car. IMO anyway. FFRR TD6 HSE

All figures quoted using V-Power.

I suppose I should have said that all my figures are quoted using the cheapest supermarket petrol I can find. I work on the fact that it all comes out of the same tanks at the refinery - and if it's inflammible then a Range Rover (or any Land Rover) will burn it (copiously) and convert the burning to movement in some inefficient way!

I used to average about 15-16 round town and saw 21mpg on a long motorway trip in my old 4.4 2006 Mercedes CLS

But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C...

Ok ....mis-read the title (read 4.4mpg in a V8 and thought I was doing very well in mine then Smile )

Love the V8 for all the mentioned reasons - I get approx 21mpg on motorway runs to the office and avg is around 19mpg according to onboard stuff.

If its an occasional car (or you got it for a good price like me) then V8 wins every time. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

My 4.4 petrol averaged 13.3 mpg over 57,000 miles mainly towing a 2,200kg caravan.

On a long run solo it would get about 19 at 70.

I still reckon it would run on creosote though!
