Yeah, a lot of the Audi and Merc clear is the new ceramic based stuff, hard as granite. Menzerna pads & polish on a Makita soon sees to it.

I have always wondered something. When you do a full detailing job like this using clay and polishing everything til it looks as stunning as you have managed does it last like that for a long time? When you re do it does it not take as long?

Well, to be honest, most damage like swirls and holograms are done with a poor wash technique. If a car is muddy and you wash it with a sponge you will pick up the grit contained in the mud and grind it into the paint. If you use a foam gun and a pressure washer before attacking it with a lambswool washmitt you get rid of 95% of the dirt before you make contact so there is a lot less risk of damage. Other things to avoid are chamois leathers, especially old ones which have been dropped numerous times. Sponges of any kind, brushes (they're really unkind to paint) and harsh chemicals. If you wouldn't use it on your old boy then don't use it on the car. I get mine muddy, usually by going greenlaning. It has very little in the way of swirlies though and this is all due to me looking after it. It was quite shocking when I first got it mind you. Several goes with the kit and she looks nice now. Through the winter I only ever use the PW, never a full on wash. Just enough to keep the salt off the underneath. HTH. Dom. |
