General rule of thumb:

Run your car through confused.com and check what your current insurer quotes, its bound to be a lot lower than the renewal quote, then ring up renewals and pester them to at least match it (this is of course if you don't want to change insurers).

You have to watch out for all the added extras as these ramp up the premium, but check you don't have the same cover elsewhere (e.g. my bank account gives free vehicle breakdown & recovery on all vehicles and free personal accident protection and legal cover to some extent, and your home insurance probably/possibly covers small items too.)

Otherwise just go for the lowest quote (see caveat above) as they all insure each other anyway Evil or Very Mad .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I went on the price comparison sites before my renewel came through and Admiral had the best quote.

When I got my renewel at the start of December mine had gone up quite a lot, so I called my current insurer and told them my Admiral quote.

They said they couldnt beat it but they matched it, so I have stayed for another year.

I always shop around even if the quote is good, mainly because I am tight! Thumbs Up Reformed

Just a word of caution for those using Swiftcover...

I got a quote from them for fully comp insurance on a Range Rover a while ago - after doing the online form filling their quote was £££'s cheaper than anyone else and very nearly paid the premium...

...it was only when suspicion got the better of me and I phoned in to confirm their premium cost, I discovered that my car would not be covered for theft without a tracker device fitted despite being fully comp insured...

...they had assumed that a Range Rover is fitted with a tracker device despite not a single mention, or reference of it within the form filling and did not point this out in any way when providing their cheap premium cost online.

I fear I may have only found this out after the policy paperwork had turned up (who really reads this after having paid the premium?) - or worse, after some stinking little toe-rag had had it away with my pride and joy.

Direct Line are another insurer that require a tracker to be fitted otherwise you wont be covered for theft. From the sounds of it though they are a bit more upfront about it as you have to inform them which tracker you have fitted when purchasing the policy.

I got a RAC Tracstar fitted. From memory, I think it was £300 for the device and the first year, and £130 every year after that. Paul

there's obviously insurance for all budgets and each to his own and all that - but it's about insuring risk (and fear!) and so wife and I have a bonkers, multicar policy with Hiscox.

its all bells and whistles - and the key thing it pays out when needed.

This time last year I rolled my beloved Defender 90 (53 plate, nice JE mods etc) and they sent a RRS courtesy car and spent £14k fixing the Defender.

So whilst it is expensive - it does work and I'm happy to pay (through the nose) for peace of mind.

(its obviously easier to be positive about it - having had it pay out...so i'm 'up' thus far).

Just out of curiosity, I ran a quote through Admiral for a S/C, quote came back circa £560 which I thought was fantastic. Considering the cheapest I could find for this Merc. was £1000+

It's swaying me more and more to a supercharged Whistle 2006 Mercedes CLS
1991 Retro-style Mini
But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C...

Just renewed with Swiftcover.
Last year bought the policies through quidco and got £28 cashback. This year I have adjusted the RR mileage to reflect actual yearly driving and got RR covered for £302 and my beauty of a 406 HDI for £242 whilst protecting the no claims(12years)...interesting how a £500 banger can cost almost as much to insure as a £30,000 RR?
Paid for on clubcard so a day out for the kids too...
Closest Admiral multicar could get was £850. '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

does the 406 not cover more miles??

When you get to a certain age the area and milage are the biggest factors.

The 406 is more likely to be worth £1k+ anyway as they are in demand, specially if its the 8v 110bhp unit.

the 406 is down as 10,000miles but I would be amazed to get £800 (what i paid for it in 2010) for it. Great car though as a workhorse. On the normal run to work I can get 62mpg - makes it hard to justify spending out on a replacement, even the Skoda Fabia Greenline II (95mpg/£0VED) - particularly since the seem not to devalue! When they do get down I may be tempted...Also love the BMW 520d touring - 60mpg from an automatic... '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD
