Leaking Rocker Cover Gaskets

Problem

This is a common issue on the BMW M62 engine. Although in itself not a critical issue, the slow seepage of oil can fill the spark plug wells, the coil-pack then gets saturated with oil and can fail. There doesn't seem to me a specific age or mileage that the seals start to fail, sometimes only one side will go, sometimes both.

Symptoms

The initial symptoms are a judder when pulling away or a quick flashing Check Engine Light, this happens when the oil is interfering with the spark getting from the coil pack to the spark plug.

Cure

Replacing the rocker cover gaskets is a strait forward job, although one does have to de-pressurise the fuel line if you are replacing the LH cover. It can get a bit messy as you are dealing with the oil system. It is often "good value" to let a garage do this job for you as it should take them approximately 2-3 hours (max). Sometimes just tightening the covers can cure the problem if they have worked loose over time - but it is important not to over tighten them (10Nm) and they must be tightened in the correct sequence (See WSM)

Parts

The part numbers for replacement are:

  • LH # LR003813
  • RH # LR003812

Cost is approximately £20.00 per side.
