Fuel gun keep clicking when refuelling *

I have a rr tdv8 and ever since I bought it from a dealer a few months ago (no longer under warranty) it takes an ages to fill up!
Once inserting the gun into the nozzle and pulling the trigger the fuel will flow into the tank for a few second and then it would click causing the fuel to stop flowing ,this is because the fuel tank is telling the gun that the gas tank is full ? I times the fill up times once -7 minutes ........

Any ideas?
Yours truly

Happens to me with my TD6, I have to rotate gun to the 9o'clock position, even then it may click one or twice on a fill up.

Have you set off the wrong fuel protection.

My handbook warns that if you use a petrol gun it will trigger something in the pipe to prevent fueling which must be reset to allow the diesel gun back in.

Look in your spare wheel well for a yellow plastic thingy which if you insert it into the filler neck, will reset the system.

Very technical term that - "thingy"!

Procedure is in the handbook under I think mis-fuelliing Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Same here since I changed from the SC to TDV8 , now all I do is hold the nozzle upside down when filling up problem solved , main reason for it cutting out is due to the air being pushed up and causing the nozzle to shut off when filling the right way ....
If you get my drift Thumbs Up

I had this until the last time I filled up when I pushed the fuel nozzle hard down into the filler pipe and something appeared to click, the nozzle went fully in and I was then able to run the fuel nozzle flat out.
Filled the tank a lot quicker.

There is a technical bulletin to cover this fault and ours suffered when we bought it. The bulletin advises about the 9 o'clock position technique but if that fails, as we found, they refit a new neck - all warranty work but quite an involved job! '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

Where can i find the technical bulletin? Would it be deemed a manufacturing fault meaning free repair?

Hi,
Phone/pop into the dealer and ask them to look it up. I think there is a list buried on the internet somewhere but I am sure the dealer will be able to track it down. Certainly a manufacturing defect and therefore a warranty job (i.e. free) if you have warranty. I am glad I did not see what was going on but I understand most of the rear of the car has to come out to get access to the filler pipe system.
when we bought the car she was under the three year initial warranty and since has tripped onto the Approved used/top level LR warranty. £94 a month (for 10 months) but with this car, worth every penny - I hate to think what bill I have racked up so far but it includes this job, new tailgate, numerous little bits, and the service manager is such a nice chap, he bills me as though my car is a very old TD6 (£8.90 for 10ltrs of Castrol!), swaps tyres over whilst MOTing her and ensures the dealership car cleaner does not come anywhere near my car.
Sorry I could not help anymore with the bulletin (I thought he had emailed me a copy but could not find it) but it is a common problem and it suggests something like insert nozzle, rotate 90 degrees and squirt. You should be able to see whether the miss-fuelling flap has closed - a bright yellow jobbie down the tube. As mentioned, need restting with the little yellow tool near the spare.
Best of luck,

I had this on mine and told the Dealer while it was under warranty. using the LTB the fuel neck was replaced, but it still happens.

Like everyone else, I have to hold the nozzle upside down, the 9 o clock position doesn't work for me. It only seems to be the faster pumps that do this. PITA! Discovery 4 HSE

Another excellent example of how a 'gizmo' on the FFRR impedes use, like TMPS etc.

On the Freelander2, and the Defender, the fuel filler neck is just a big wide pipe you can insert the fuel nozzle ALL THE WAY IN, up to its rubber spill neck flap thing. Fuel pours in thick and fast, and life is good.

On the RR, the fuel filler neck is restricted not once but twice. First its size is too small to fully insert a fuel nozzle, second, the bloody anti misfuel thing makes it worse. AARRGGHH!!

I am not stupid enough to put petrol in a Diesel car, I have never done this, or vice versa, so I don;t need a gizmo to save me from myself. Discovery 4 HSE
