Problem Part 2 (Hum/buzzing)

Hi

At road speeds above 50MPH a humming noise develops from the front nearside of the car. As the speed increases a buzzing/vibration develops behind the dash. I am sure this is related to air pressure because if I hear a gust of wind or feel a strong gust of wind through the steering the noise increases. I have checked for loose body panels and roof pillar trim but nothing seems loose.

Could this be a problem in the HVAC system? when intake air is under pressure. Can anyone tell me where the main fresh air input is located so I can begin my search there or can anyone suggest a fix this noise is driving me mad!!!

I had a really annoying buzzing for a few days over Xmas and it was speed/wind related. It was the rubber finishing at the front of the rail gutter on the roof which had come unstuck by about 1 cm and was bending up and catching the wind. could be this? I cured it by sticking it back down and now no noise.

Thanks for the heads up

I think that I checked the windscreen rubbers ect but I will re-check this.

Its the harder bit of plastic casing that clips down below the screen that is the problem. If they have been pulled up during a service/repair they are often not reseated properly....

As stated in my original post I have checked roof pillar trim but I will re-check this area again. Thanks for the reply

After the useful replies I decided to check the two areas suggested.

1. Rubber seal that protrudes from roof gutter.

This was found to be loose. At speed air could get be forced under this seal causing it to vibrate/buzz

2. Front scuttle.

I could not find much wrong here. The rubber seal that is attached to the scuttle and forms a seal between it and the windscreen seemed tight.

I decided to use heavy tape to secure both areas and then drive the car at speed and listen for any noise. I was pleased to find with the tape applied NO noise was heard. To determine which area was causing the noise I first removed the tape from the scuttle area and drove the car at speed again. As soon as I got past 55MPH the noise returned proving the noise is coming from the scuttle.

This shows the taped area near the roof gutter (this was not causing the noise but still needs sealing)

This photo shows the rubber seal between the scuttle and the windscreen. The tape has been removed but was laid over the joint between the rubber seal and the windscreen as indicated by the arrows. The sound stopped when the tape was installed and returned when the tape was removed.

Now the problem area has been identified is it a good idea just to seal between the underside of the rubber and the windscreen for the full length of the windscreen. If so will this have any consequences if the windscreen needs to be replaced in the future? and what type of sealant would be recommended for both areas?

This is the strange thing, everything seems tight, there is no movement in the scuttle at all, the rubber seal is also tight against the windscreen although the noise did stop when I taped as stated.
