I think it is operated by the ignition/steering lock. I had to lubricate it the other week . Needed to take the gear/handbrake lever surround off to gain satisfactory access. Plenty how to vids on U tube. No need to pull gear knob off like one bloke did. Previous cars:

Did you find yours was sticking more in cold weather? Mine only seems to be a problem in the colder weather. Start the engine then takes 45 seconds or so to be able to move the stick, in the summer no issue moves as soon as you start up |

Perhaps lack of use. I think it had been working up to sticking for a long period of time. I was really worried that it would entail an expensive repair. Pleased to find u tube tutorials and even more pleased that after direct application of WD 40 and then silicone lubricant spray, solenoid works very slickly. Removing the gear stick/ handbrake surround also helps with mopping up excess spray. Previous cars:
