Ex MOD LR 110 Questions

All,

Got a hankering for buying a bog standard ex MOD 110 hard top, for tinkering with and doing some of the heavier work on the shoot.

Witham MOD are only 20 mins from me so I can go and view to my hearts content, I know the 2.5 NAD engines are gutless but I still want one. I must be nuts. Laughing

Here's what I am looking at - quite like the idea of getting a tin of Nato green and brushing it on, in time some bigger tyres etc.

http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,2...Rover_.htm

Has anyone ever bought an ex MOD vehicle? Is it likely to be a money pit or are the basics the same as when I bought my Series 3? i.e. Chassis, crossmembers, bulkhead etc.

Can anyone offer some good advice?

Anyone know how much weight you can load a 110 with in the back?

Am I mad? The older 110's on private sales look like total dogs. The military ones at least have nothing to hide, as in there's no trim to remove etc, its just bare metal. Discovery 4 HSE

I like the way it says:

Mileage From:50,000
Condition From:Good
Guide price from:£2,500.00

But I don't think these three coincide...

Honesty is probably a great attribute. Witham MOD been is business for ages, plenty of D3 people bought gear there (Sankey trailers...). If you're happy with the price and condition it'll probably be OK.[/i] Graham

They are basic (less to go wrong) even lacking power steering.

They need "winding up" to reach motorway speeds, any kind of incline will reduce speed to 55 mph...

I followed a 2.5 110 with water bowser trailer in a Bedford MJ (4 tonner) I was being held up by the Land Rover!! Laughing

Mind you, I can only vouch for the 110's my Unit holds (soon to get Wolf Yay!...... (Only 12 years after entering service!))

We recently lost a few Project Tithonus 110's. Due to not needing so many Land Rovers across the Army it was cast. Each Tithonus vehicle was rumered to have cost £8K (+ possibly) to refurb only a few years ago, ours was cast for substantially lower than that.... (Wish I could have purchased it myself)

Shame about the lack of PAS, this makes a big difference to the 'wantability' of it. Discovery 4 HSE

The spare wheel on the bonnet doesn't help with the steering. (Try steering off road in deep mud, you'll soon have arms like Pop Eye!)

Mind you, easily enogh to convert, just more £'s

I wonder if there is a PAS conversion kit out there with all the right parts? Discovery 4 HSE

Land Rover breakers is your best place to look. ABout £200-300 in parts then add labour.

If you go for taller tyres it will effect the steering and make it even slower, and really rubbish on any incline.

Most of the ex mod landies are very abused, squaddies did not really look after them too well.

The seats are crap

There are some v8's around, if you can stomach the fuel bill. Incidently the 2.5 nad are not frugal.

Best to find one with a 200 or 300 tdi conversion if you want something to do more than drive to b&q and the tip.

Or if you want an ex army landie, look for a 101. Much more fun Very Happy

Maybe 70bhp doesn't put you off?

Friend of mine wanted a Disco from mod sales. Had his father go and check it out and the interior was bow-loxed. Suggest you go and have a look before bidding.

Aside from that, if you just want one for messin' about, why not?

As above, they will be abused, think company cars that are pool cars and don't have electric anything other than the starter and lights Wink

For shooting and kit and so forth the tits are better for the money as they have roll cages and seats and bits already added on.

If you can find one there with a nearly shot or shot engine then convert it to 300tdi and get it cheaper as well as while the engine is out the pas upgrade will be easier.

they should take a fair load in the back as their wieght limit is 3.5tonne and they cant weight much more than 2tonne themselves. I've seen them loaded up to well over 4t and watched it nearly bottom out, and then have a sankey put on the back Shocked when i say milk floats could have beat it im not far wrong but it still kept going through the mud Very Happy

If you look there are usually some navy/air force base only 110 CSW's that knock on there sometimes, though a lot seem to only want to be sold outside of the eu and sometimes only outside the UK Sad

Not seen any 200/300 TDi ones for sale at Witham other than a red 110 pick up with a crane on the back. Discovery 4 HSE

you wont Smile

i mean get one with a shot engine from there if they have any and then convert it yourself Smile Plenty of info out there from others who have done the bits already.

another engine option is the isuzu/gm 3.0 diesel or maybe its the 3.1 that doesn't use many electrical items for the engine part either so as a work hack it would provide a good base for reliability and have enough grunt to pull a loaded 110 around Smile

have you thought about just getting a trailer to put the shooting kit in so as not to take up space in the RR and using something like the Sankey which can take the abuse and is easily ply lined and covered??

I already use the RR for these chores and it copes brilliantly, just fancied having a utility type LR that can be abused. The downside is total lack of power and pas. Discovery 4 HSE
