Flat Battery - Rear lights remain on whilst charging.

Drove the car this morning and no issues.
Went out this evening and pressed the ignition had a couple of error messages, camera fault, fuel low etc and then a very light clicking when I pressed start..
Battery is now flatter than a flat thing (7.8v) and is on charge.
However the rear lights are on as well as the rear number plate - is there any way to turn these off whilst I am charging the car or will they turn off once the battery is charged sufficiently?
Am sure I have read something about this in the past but couldn't find anything by using the search function

Car is a 4.4 TDV8 2011 L322 Autobography - a lot of bells and some of the whistles...owner with no idea!

Does anyone know anythign about this or can the OP give a follow up on what they did next?

Just got back from a 12 day holiday, used FFRR on day we departed on a 30 mile ish round trip to drop dogs at kennels and all worked fine. On return from hols battery is dead as a dodo. Putting meter on it reads just over 5v Shocked so have put it on a charge but has also notice this flickering of the read lights every 30-60 seconds or so.

Not sure if the battery will recover from this and also not sure why its suddenly drained - will have to look into that once its recovered (or replaced) - The battery was new in July 2022 so wouldn't expect it to be failing after 3 years so maybe some fault has developed. Have noticed over the last few months that the parking sensors and rear camera have had intermittently been failing but hadn't had time to investigate that yet, maybe that was an indication the battery was starting to have problems? ----------- Current Garage --------------------

To be honest, not a clue!
Battery was on charge for about 12 hours but failed to hold charge so had to replace it. Like yours mine had crashed to somewhere around 3-5 volts.
I never did track down what the explanation for it was but touch wood since replacing the battery it has never resurfaced. I was suspicious of some sort of parasitic drain but have not had any issues since so think it was failing battery.
Weirdly Google tells me that you should replace a battery every 3-5 years??????? Rolling with laughter 2011 L322 Autobography - a lot of bells and some of the whistles...owner with no idea!

Thanks Paul - will leave it on charge for all of today and see if it recharges, if not will sort out getting a new battery tomorrow and go from there - hopefully its just a failing battery like yours and not something more complicated! ----------- Current Garage --------------------

Did either of you initialise the Battery Maintenance System (BMS) when changing the battery ? Worth a google if you’re not familiar with it.

That’s a valid point. I did when replacing the battery but wonder if it needed it when charging from flat? 2011 L322 Autobography - a lot of bells and some of the whistles...owner with no idea!

Something weird going on. Well it is FFRR I suppose Rolling with laughter

It didn't seem to me that the battery was taking a charge as after quite some time on charge I was still only getting 5-6v on my meter reading, so was expecting to need to replace the battery. In preparation for this I needed to move the RR to make space for some steps next to it to aid with lifting out the battery. I therefore jump started it to move it. After moving it and turning off I noticed the locking / unlocking was working again (wasn't before) and for a laugh I tried starting it again - it started! Tested the voltage on the battery again and it was reading about 11v.

I put it on the charger again this morning and by this evening the charger lights (NOCO one) show it is now fully charged.

Will see if it starts in the morning and maybe I won't now need a replacement - will be watching like a hawk and making sure my jump starter battery is fully charge and in the boot just in case!

Will also stick the IID on it tomorrow and check if there are any faults. ----------- Current Garage --------------------
