SDV6 Prospective purchase

Hi there,

So I’ve been many years without a Fullfat, having had a couple of V8’s, and SC’s a few years ago. Probably my favourite ever car, apart from the fuel cost.

So I’m sorely tempted currently by an SDV6, however it’s had a replacement engine two years ago.

It’s a 2016 car (Eu6), with 118k miles, though engine more like 50k. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance. 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

I'm not a mechanic or tech but i have had a lot of RR's and for me MY63 L405 V6 is one of the best RR's I have owned.

I know the V6 have crank issues, but i didn't have one issue in four years, purchased with 3000 miles and swapped at 60000 miles, oil change every six months.

I’d be more worried if it had JUST had a new engine say within 20K miles.
Get a full RAC inspection done. If SE or AB spec, then specifically have the roof drains and active suspension pipes checked for corrosion. If it drives sweetly with no smoke or hesitation, and stops in a straight line, maybe buy it and then change all the fluids/megaflush. Make sure its had all the belts changed, and have oil pressure checked. The V6 engines need a new oil pump done with the belt service, but many owners are cheapskates and do no preventive maintenance. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thanks for comments so far. The car with the replacement engine sold before I got to it. So still looking and trying to make my mind up between Tdv6 and SDV8! 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

AFAIK the V6 doesn't have the stability system which makes the drive so radically better than the L322. Only the SDV8 has it I believe.

I wouldn't say the active suspension makes the ride radically better between the 4.4 and the 3.0. The difference is barely noticable on normal driving. The only difference I could feel was when pushing a bit around a corner, the 4.4 does feel more planted compared to the 3.0. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about the corroding pipes on the 3.0. Current:

Check the service history like a hawk! MOT history for miles each year etc is it a city car?
Check the usage short trips etc.
The normal bloke on the street would be reluctant to change from JLR advertised oil service of yearly or 16kmiles etc Oil is cheap Engines are not!
Changing the oil every year/service miles doesn't cut it! due to known fuel dilution especially short runs which increase fuel dilution.
There is already a new thread today of a SDV8 failure 2017?? I wonder why? 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Thanks Zebedee - is that the ACE Pipes? So is this a non issue if I get a TDV6, or was it an option on the V6 engined cars? 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

I found a really interesting post on the RRS forum which seemed to indicate that oil dilution can be largely avoided by using 5W40 oil instead of the recommended 5W30. Think it was from some research Range Rover World did. 2012 SDV8 Vogue SE

Giggle all you like, or read the article, and if you have any constructive criticism I'd be interested to hear, but it seems logical to me.

Call me cynical but I'd always be suspicious of "research" showing how you must change your oil now on a website selling the product/service that this research recommends.

And it mentions buying Edge 5W40 C1 - which does not exist on Castrol's website, nor any other company AFAIK.

Frequent oil changes are the key. 2012 Vogue TDV8 in Aintree green over sand

Yes correct, except it’s 5W40 C4.

There is no such C1 grade available ANYWHERE.
Even the 5W40 C4 is rarer than rocking horse poop, only available in bulk. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
