Querys about buying a used L405

Hi,

I'm looking at picking up a used L405.

I've done a fair bit of research and had a few questions I was hoping you could help me with.

Experience: owned a 2009 L302 / also got a Jag xf with 3.0 diesel v6

General usage: wife to use on the school run, circa 10mins dual carriage way, 5 mins town then 10mins dual carriage way. Hoping this will be fine for no dpf issues. I'll also use it once a week on a 1hr drive to work and back.

Budget: 20-25k (should a few k leave a contingency fund)

Mileage: under 60k ideally

- I'm looking at a 2015 or newer model to avoid the electrical gremlins in the earlier models. Is this just any car advertised from 2015 onwards or was it from a specific registration date onwards?

- struggling to decide between the 3.0 or 4.4 diesel. I'm prefer the 3.0 for the mpg and tax but the crank shaft failures scare the hell out of me. How common are they? I've read a fair bit on forums like this regarding them but this would not be a fair summation.

- is vogue se / autobiography worth more money than standard vogue?

- would love to know the '20 things to check list' when viewing cars. Does this forum have one?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

I've had many FFRR and Disco's all with various versions of the 3.0 engine and haven't had any issues with any of them engine-wise. The Euro engines are very smooth, quick and economical (true 30mpg over all journeys, including under 10 miles)

I've always had SE versions with a spec good enough for me, most of which I don't use anyway! HUD is definitely worth having though. When the L405 first came out most reviews said the 3.0 SE was the "sweet spot" of the range. My 21.5MY is so good I wouldn't change for a L406 as I don't think it's worth the money at £125k for the same spec car. All LR cars from 1984

Go for 4.4 if you are living in a hilly place.
3.0 is perfect for plains.

With that budget and the market now, you should have a lot of choice. I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s been great (fingers crossed).

If I did it again I would hold out for:

Definitely a 4.4 v8 and mine is the VSE
Heated screen is great - do they all have that?
Adapative cruise (I have it and love it)
The top of the line entertainment system 1250w I think ( I have the 825w system and it’s not quite good enough)
Deployable tow bar and steps - I’ve bought them to retrofit now which is a bit of a pain
Apple CarPlay would be nice but not a deal breaker

Those are my thoughts after a year of ownership. Enjoy the search!

I had MY63 3.0 for 4 years and not one warranty claim. Excellent car, agile, quick and quite. They don't have the turbo lag like the V8.

I had L322's V8's with no issues but my last one (MY18) was an absolute nightmare. When it finally threw its hand in, JLR had to buy it because they couldn't fix it and no longer produce the 4.4 V8.

I've just changed from a 2013 4.4 Vogue to a 2017 3.0 Autobiography, my thoughts are:

4.4:
It is a lovely engine with bags of torque that just keeps going.
Did 50k with only minor issues and average of 28mpg
My problem areas were: oil level sensor (what a nightmare), oil cooler (not a huge issue) and not much else other than servicing.
4.4's have the problem of the adaptive suspension pipes that can rust and expensive to replace, but the adaptive suspension does give a (marginally) better ride.
4.4's are slightly more expensive.
Euro 5 cars are £700+ to tax each year

3.0:
Good engine with plenty of torque.
Has timing belts that need changing at 7yrs/105k
Has the risk of crank bearings, which affects some but not that many (less than 5%?)
Doing 29.5mpg so far.
It's a later car so is Euro 6 and AdBlue, rather than Euro 5 - so £330 tax, or £190 if after March 2017

Other thoughts, 21" wheels give a nicer ride than the 22". 2017 cars got Apple CarPlay. Radar cruise control is lovely and is not standard on Vogue. Massaging seats is nice but not a deal breaker. More things on the Autobiography means more to go wrong. Current:
- 2017 L405 3.0 V6 Autobiography
Sold:
- 2013 L405 4.4 TDV8 Vogue
- 2004 L322 4.4 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 2002 L322 4.4 HSE (having fixed timing chain guides)
- 2000 P38 4.6 Vogue (BRC LPG)
- 1981 2-door In-Vogue
- 1980 Ex-Army SIII LWB
- 1976 SIII LWB
- 1968 SIIA
Stripped for parts:
- 2003 L322 4.4 Vogue

What do you mean by HUD?

No concern about crank shaft failures?

The crank shaft issues really frighten me, is it really 5%? Do you know if there are any stats anywhere?

Thanks

I'm not sure if it was ever offered as a factory option but I fitted a Chinese in-line unit thing that hijacks the OEM nav function and it works really well. See my thread I linked to above.

Thanks.

looks a bit beyond me to be honest but I'm guessing I'll be able to find someone who will install it.
