Do I really need CarPlay?

I listen to radio 2 all the time, well not Jeremy Vine and not Scott Mills, but other than that!! But I was missing Waze as the onboard Sat Nav could be better, I looked at all sorts of solutions because I didn't want to fit a new screen, so Brodit phone holders, Cup holder phone holders, I even made or got a gadget the fitted into the CD slot (as I don't use it). I then bought a separate screen and set it up alongside the existing one using the CD slot thingy.

But then I thought I can do this cheaper (actually for next to nothing) so I set my phone up UBER style and it happily runs Waze and internet radio (mostly Radio2 on BBC Sounds) but there are lots and lots to chose from. I always have the car Sat Nav on with no destination set (it tracks me all the time and it amuses me when it cant find the new road I'm on) but the phone is set as the audio source and plays Internet radio and Waze directions through the car via Bluetooth. I can of course revert to normal and ignore the phone altogether.

So already I have already wasted some cash on various phone holders and tablet screens I haven't spent a couple of k and had my dash modified in any way and I can still listen to the radio and get Waze. I think I can get Spotify or whatever else from the phone but I tend to play Spotify tracks from the Library.

I have the same quandary - I feel like I should get a CarPlay screen, but still make do with Waze on my phone.

I use a Brodit clip, but with a different cradle that has an induction charger built in.

Yes this seems to work for me, when I find all the bits and pieces I have and no longer need I'll be offering them on here. I don't have any wires going to the phone as I just use it's internal battery I never have it on long enough to flatten it. Geoff

My daughter drives an old Ford Fiesta (without any modern infotainment of course) and after using many phone holders, got this inexpensive screen from AE and now has wireless CarPlay and sound through the car speakers. It works surprisingly well for the twenty something € she paid for it. If my car didn't have CarPlay, for sure I would get something like that, it's after all really useful to have Spotify, Apple Music, Google Maps... Not to mention the phone interface...

A couple of pics on this thread- https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic56346.html

The Brodit clip is basically a U shaped piece of plastic, so I drilled a hole in it. I then screwed into half of another holder after having taken it apart to remove the bit that mounts to car - if that makes sense Confused
