Disco 5 depreciation?

Hi all

Having commenced discussion with the committee about swapping the FF, SWMBO pointed out (with some degree of tardiness that only a woman can conjure) that the FF may have lost 50+% in value since we purchased it.

In need to some man maths I turned to alternative vehicles as replacements as I'm not sure I can get a ticket off said committee for a another FF.

Having scanned the horizon at X5's XC90's and even in a very weak moment Santa Fe's (I'll get my coat), eyes settled on a nice Byron Blue 3.0 D5 HSE Luxury. There seem to be quite a few MY 17 or 18 few sub £30k with max 60k miles.

Finally my Q... anybody know if this is going to be 50% cheaper in just three years? or is this just a 405 thing. I refuse to get caught in the lease trap and I get its subjective and varies a bit from car to car but is there an overall LR depreciation trend that basically say just keep what you have got and make do.

I've just retired and TBH I don't want to have to find 15-20K every three years just to stay relatively still.

Did I really just admit to looking at Santa Fe's? 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

I've always used a general rule of thumb on cars that they depreciate at 20% per year on average (reducing balance basis, not straight line), so after 3 years it will be worth more or less half what you paid for it.

Seems to be bourne out by the cars me and swmbo have bought in the past 15 years.

One caveat - I'm not talking about EV's here Shocked

Lots of resistance to EV's so I would expect they would at some time increase in value. Remember the shortage in manufacturing during covid and price certainly for FFRR increased, they went higher than the price I paid for mine! Such a fool I was Rolling with laughter I should have sold it, and got a 5L 6 months later Whistle 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue
