Evening all moving full time to just north of Bordeaux next year and will take my trusty l322 2007 which is still going strong post 250k miles but need to buy a lhd for local stuff and the odd run back to London.
Was thinking of buying a 405 spend about 50k but vehicles are expensive in France have had people suggest Belgium to buy some say Germany anybody any real info as opposed to a mate of a mate stuff ?

Some hoops to jump though to import form anywhere but pretty straight forward if the car is already in an EU country (no VAT and tax etc). I used a guy to import my L322 to France from the UK and it was pretty easy.

Regarding prices, I looked at other countries when I was buying the wifes car, and germany is a decent place but also Belgium is worth a look.

Where is it your moving to? I am just west of Limoges.

I forgot to add that I was looking many years ago when living in Gibraltar. to buy LHD. My analysis at the time was that via Autoscout24 I felt it was Germany that produced marginally better VFM

The test is however the various import / export taxes that are prohibitive. I bought UK registered and proposed using on a 6 month there and home basis. New car import exportation at the time was a minefield but doable as a personable import

Folks from Poland and all the Baltic countries tend to buy in Germany, and many send onwards to Russia and Belarus from there.

Anyone who has driven across Poland on the toll road or up the Baltic Highway will have seen all the car transporters carrying cars.

But does it have to be LHD? A pal of mine in Spain wanted one recently, did a load of research and ended up taking one from the UK. There's loads of blokes who arrange the import at minimal cost. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Thanks all some good ideas and advice - interesting question on the LHD I could take a RHD from here and buy a smaller car for my wife locally but will look at the various options mentioned

When living in France, used to have regular day trips to Royan. Nice place. Quite a popular tourist area. La Palmyre, just to the north, is a favourite of MoH.

Charente Maritime is generally a good area and has a good moderate climate.

Yes we have been going to that area for about 10 years 30 odd years to France every year - Mrs T was senior cabin crew on BA for all those years so even with free flights we always drove into France
