"Written off"

The term "written off" is sometimes used after a problem with Sunroof drainage. The term 'written off" is one car insurers use to describe a "write off", I don't see how insurers are involved with Sunroof drains or am I missing something. Geoff

I think the term is being used as it relates to the cost of repair being in excess of the worth of the vehicle...

The sunroof drains are so expensive if done by a dealer as they have to replace the whole roof assembly...

Plenty of info on doing it for a few hours work and £20 though.... Thumbs Up Pete

Thanks Pete I was just being pedantic, I always have in my mind the phrase “beyond economic repair” which is probably more accurate than “written off” although I’m not sure (but I can guess) how the people providing my expensive extended warranty wouldn’t pay out - never again! Geoff

In terms of the sunroof drain issue, it’s not so much the cost of the roof part of the repair, it’s the additional cost of significant water damage at floor level, in replacing the multiple electronic modules amplifiers and looms etc which can run the total bill in excess of £20K. If the market value is less than double the repair cost, the vehicle coluld be “beyond economic repair” and “written off” by the insurer.

One of a few reasons I prefer my humble “Vogue” model. Thumbs Up “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I think it might be old insurance language deriving from the act of writing it off their liability “book”.

Could be wrong.
