A sobering thought - oil related

A few assumptions,

16000 miles between oil changes (LR recommendation I believe)
Average 35 MPH (you will be surprised how low your average is)
That’s 457 hours driving (haven’t factored in anything for standing still!!)
That’s 27400 minutes
1600 RPM (assumed average)
Your engine has completed 43 million 840 thousand revolutions

Our 4.4 TDV8 has big timing chains crushing our oil on top of your typical engine components putting our oil under extreme duress.

It makes me question my 3k to 4k oil changes and I use top quality oil without fail….. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

The oil is not under extreme duress in these low revving engines. JLR oil change intervals are too long but 3-4k is overkill as is premium oil IMO. Soot load and fuel contamination are the reasons to change the oil. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

JayGee, to say you’re more knowledgeable with these cars than me would likely be the understatement of the year so I know you are right.

3k to 4k miles for me is 2 oil changes a year and at £100 for premium oil and filter it’s only costing me an extra £100 per year. Don’t get me wrong, on my salary now having left a lucrative career behind me £100 is not chump change but it gives me peace of mind. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Interesting - do you have any links discussing timing chains and their detriment to oil?

I always thought (perhaps wrongly Smile ) that the big-ends were the oil crushing dept. of an engine?

I spend far too long watching you tube videos especially vehicle related but trying to locate would be quite the mission (I will try). The motor oil geek does cover this subject and his content is very informative and avoids the typical anecdotal bull. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Oil shear is where the long chain molecules that extrend oil viscosity range are chopped up in gear and chain meshing but as these engines have low viscosity range oil it's not an issue. Oil film strength is important for plain bearing surfaces like crank bearings and cams but this is principaly down to oil base stock quality which remains stable over time but which can deteriorate with fuel dilution. These engines are very robust so there is no need for undue anxiety over this and <10k mile oil changes with the correct oil will ensure the engine outlasts most other components on the car. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
