Prices trade v private

My first post so please be kind Very Happy

I have had a few older RR models and now looking to get back into one, particularly the 405 model. Looking at Autotrader, private sales at this point, I can see quite a bit of variance. Specifically 2017 Autobiography spec. prices range from £25k- £35k plus for what looks like the same spec and mileage and all with full RR history. Of course no car is exactly the same given the boxes that can be ticked at new etc and it’s up to individuals to decide at what price to set. More of a issue is that trade seems to be valuing at £17-£20k which given they are then selling on at a £10-£15k seems quite a high margin even for a prestige car that could have issues they need to deal with as they will be selling with some kind of warranty and the standard 30 day return if major faults come up.

Could I have your thoughts here please, I am not looking for the bargain of the year and at the end of the day the market and individuals will set the price but interested in what people have to say. Meanwhile the search continues !

2018 is the crossover year with a facelift so whilst two cars may be similar spec and year of registration, the tech behind the spec is different with the later ones being more desirable (generally), for reasons such as the ability to take Android auto/CarPlay as standard First time FFRR owner

Hi, there’s a larger trade margin as there is a much larger risk vs reward at play. The gap is broad as some traders see this as an opportunity to make bigger gains so one has to be even more careful when buying a used vehicle at trade.

Like most luxury purchases it’s past history is critical to knowing its current condition, missing service work, a lack of paperwork, poor condition, cheap tyres, or a general lack of care all point towards a vehicle that has possibly been run on a budget.

Trade prices are generally low for these vehicles but the bills can rack up pretty quick so a £4 or £5k margin on a £20k+ car can evaporate quite suddenly.

Thanks all for the helpful comments, just to clarify it’s the pre 2018 model I am looking at which as you have all noted has a fair bit of extra improvements and worth the extra if budgets allow..

Most of the ones around the £30k mark have full RR history and when contacted up to date with brakes and shod with decent tyres etc. All about the condition as is also noted. I will let you know how things go and look at the ads here too

Not sure what your budget is or whether your preference is diesel or petrol but for me 2018 facelift is the way to go. I think more importantly is though service history and warranty as these cars can be horrendously expensive if they go wrong.
Another option would be to have a look on this forum at what’s for sale as the descriptions are far more extensive and some even pointing out what may need to be done in the future. Good luck with your search 2021 SVautobiography Dynamic Black ( Black wheels need to go )

I would like the full fat petrol but they are not so common, Diesel lots more of so will probably end up with one which is fine with me. This time round budget I would like to pay no more than £28k to leave a fund for anything that crops up. Post 2018 can be something to consider later. I like the SDV6, just sold a Discovery 4 with that combo, but a V8 sounds nicer of course.

I bought mine a few months ago and found the right car at a small indie dealer and paid a bit more for it as a result. I usually prefer to buy cars privately so wasn't so keen on paying the dealer premium but it was the right car, and I have just had a new oil cooler and suspension pump under warranty. So perhaps the premium was worth it in this case.

As someone else said, when you start doing jobs like that the liability for the dealer racks up quickly so the margins make sense.

Many many years ago I sold cars, but I don't know the state of the 405 market. I do still have BCA login.

For example today:

Retail is guided at £20,000 by CAP. What will the hammer price be? I don't know but if I was a dealer I would want a hefty margin in one.

That will retail more than £20k as it’s got £5k of options on it. That will go easily for CAP clean as whoever buys it knows there’s more than the £2k margin (after fees etc) that it seems to have.

I’d put money in that bring retailed at £25k in a fortnight somewhere.

FWIW, the trade in values I have got at a main agent for several FFRR have seen the mark up / asking price increase by £7k to £10k.

That allows for warranty, service, tyres, brakes, salesman’s commission, VAT and profit 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Thanks all, well that sorts out my question nicely thanks. Don’t have any problem with dealer making a living. If you had to sort out brakes, suspension bits and bobs plus a service and tyres that’s easily £4-5k before adding in warranty. looks though like the private sales for that sort of car shown here at £30k a tad high then. There are a couple around the £25k mark which may be where the motivated sellers are, guess I will find out. Your help very much appreciated!

Had a quick look at that car and it needs easily £1k worth of prep just from looking at the pictures, plus it’s history is pretty patchy at best;

You’d be a brave man to over pay for that one but some people would take a roll of the dice.
