Hi, sounds to me like you may have bent the brake dust shield during the brake refresh so it's catching on the disc, more pronounced when driving backwards could be just the angle it's catching at, or something trapped between disc & shield.

I would say the white smoke is from the fuel burning heater. All depends on the wind direction for where it exits from under the car. |
