Coding is only necessary with the 6-speed transmissions onwards, when the transmission ECU became integrated into the transmission.

Your 5-speed GM 5L40-E transmission has a separate transmission ECU mounted on the vehicle, so transmissions can be swapped over without issue. Well, there is a slight issue, in that the ECU will have stored the solenoid adaptions for the old transmission which then get foisted onto the new one, but the controller should soon sort this out as it learns the new shift times.

Its for a supercharged vogue which is the 6 speed box, so assume coding required?

If you’re changing the whole gearbox then yes it’ll need coding to the car.

This can be done quite easily using a GAP IID tool.

You could swap the ECU from the existing box to the new box if you don’t want to code it.

I swapped mine in the summer and assumed it would need coding. This was confirmed because it wouldn’t come out of Park after the swap until the gearbox was coded to the car. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I dont have an ID tool and don't fancy spending £300 for one that it locked to one vin

Which gearbox ecu are you referring to? The TCM that is located in the engine bay or the mechatronic electronic module in the gearbox sump?

The module that will need coding it the black plastic one that is bolted directly to the mechatronics unit inside the sump.

The 3 choices are:

Remove the valve body from the gearbox and swap the ECU from your old gearbox. At which time you should replace the bridge seals above the valve body as they’ll likely be flattened due to age.

Buy a diagnostics tool.

Have a garage code the replacement gearbox but seeing as they won’t come out of park when not coded you’d likely need to have them fit it.

If you’re going to be running a Range Rover then £300 for the GAP IID tool is money well spent tbh. Although it would be VIN locked to your car you can still read and clear faults and monitor live data on other cars. They always fetch £300 when selling it too so the cost of ownership won’t be much.

I am in fife and having trouble coding a second hand tcm unit could you help ?

Or would the gap tool code the 2nd hand one to it ?

I did mine using my IID tool.

Flashing the firmware on the gearbox needs an IID tool to be VIN registered so I couldn't do it on your car I'm afraid. It's not a difficult job when you've got an IID tool though.

I have bought the tool mate I fitted second hand one then garage said no wanted all new parts is it easier if I fit a new tcm unit or will it still code with second hand fitted ?

You can definitely flash a used TCM with the IID tool.
