Parking brake actuator replaced under LR warranty ? - Yes

Hi,

I had a parking brake warning come up the other day and it took a few attempts to get it to release.

The car has been into the MD and both of the actuator casings have cracked around the lower mounting screw and water has made its way in.

The warranty is refusing to cover it because it is a failure caused by water ingress, but surely the casing failure happened first and therefore that should be covered ?

Has anyone managed to get them done under the LR warranty ? They want £1,160 to replace both !

Cheers
Richard

Cant say whether warranty should cover or not but even if they dont that price quoted is obscene. Just a quick Google shows the parts are relatively cheap

https://www.lrparts.net/lr036573-parking-b...-2016.html

https://www.britishparts.co.uk/range-rover...r-lr036573

and I dont think they are much of a job to actually replace. _______________________________________________

I will do it myself if they won't cover it.

I have added another photo to my post showing the nearside one where you can see a crack between the fixing bolt and the main body.

It's a chicken and egg question.. which came first the water getting in or the crack ?? 2016 AB SDV8 Barolo black

As far as the warranty is concerned I am pretty sure that they will always say it was the water ingress first that subsequently caused the cracking but common sense would suggest that it is clearly the other way around. Rolling Eyes _______________________________________________

Main dealer strapped mine up for a year with cables ties and didn't tell me so it was out of warranty before i realised there was a problem and they failed, then said it was water ingress and duly emptied my wallet. I think you are on a hiding to nothing so get the best price you can.

I got mine from here:
https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/parking-brake...40693.html

The problem is most likely that the aluminium boss which the actuator slides over has corroded and got larger. This bursts the actuator.

I cleaned mine up (particularly the o-ring groove) and put back together. An easy job.

There is some gymnastics with the pedals and handbrake lever to recalibrate them. More gymnastics to put the brake into 'service' mode in the first place.

You can get aftermarket replacement actuators for less than £20 on eBay. Part no. LR036573 They are the same part as used on some BMW models part no. 34216794618.

I've had one fitted on mine for over 2 years / 30k miles and it's still going strong. 15 mins to fit on the driveway yourself. Kev

As Kev says above, I’ve also replaced these on the driveway using aftermarket parts, it’s not a particularly difficult task. Jonathan

Just make sure to check before buying your parts because some have the square electrical connector and some a rounded one....

What a good business, invest 60 GBP, one hour and write a bill from 1.100 GBP, like Bitcoin trading Wink)

It's the same here in Germany, the official dealer only makes money from his stamp on the invoice and the intimidated victims who would never trust such a forum run there and pay any price. L405 SDV8 2017 + Lancia Flavia Coupe 1964 + RRS L494 3.0 SDV6 + C220CDI Convertible 2021

Has anyone actually been successful in getting the warranty to cover it ? If you can show the casing failed first then they can't argue it was corrosion ? 2016 AB SDV8 Barolo black

Well, I have had a result ! Very Happy

The warranty company have now agreed to replace the one actuator under warranty after I called them to argue that the casing failed first. Their argument had been that the fixing bolt had corroded and expanded, causing the case to fail but the dealer said the bolt was ok.

They have only replaced one as only one was causing an issue so I will take the other one off, lubricate it and seal up the casing so it will hopefully last a few more years.

The fixing bolt corroding may result in it expanding and causing the casing to crack so it would be worth removing the bolt greasing it up and fitting it back as a preventative measure. 2016 AB SDV8 Barolo black
