Secondry Turbo Oil Leaking - Turbo Drain Mod? 4.4TDV8

Hi All,

I've recently been informed from an indi that there is oil leaking between the exhaust flange on the secondary turbo suggesting replacement at a cost of around £4k.

Speaking to my local Turbo Refurb guy who used to work at Garrett he doesn't think the turbo is at fault as apparently these will always leak oil slightly due to none use as they only kick in at high revs and suggested checking Engine Breathers and breather pipe to turbo.

Doing some digging I'm wondering if the turbo mod would solve this issue as the turbo isn't actually consuming oil or faulty but is due to the fact it's unused.

I have only on 1 or 2 occasions had very excessive white smoke in the past when it was booted very hard (I usually drive like miss daisy tbh)

What's your thoughts? Does the drain mod solve oil leaking also? The smoke I guess is from the oil entering the exhaust when it does kick in?

Thanks

When I bought my L322 I noticed an oil leak that sounds similar to yours, I decided to live with it until it became a problem. 6 years and nearly 100K miles later it is no worse.
Even the drain mod will cost well North of £1000, my view is that unless it’s causing a problem or getting worse then I wouldn’t be spending that kind of money on a car of that age.
As nice as they are it’s worth remembering that all but the very best examples are just 1 big bill away from being “spares or repair” on eBay

Turbo to exhaust flange will not be an oil oil tight seal so any oil inside will seep out. Latest thinking on white smoke after the 2nd turbo kicks in is that the drain hole in the oil filter to drain the housing when you change the filter starts leaking as the rubber plug hardens and oil drains into the PCV system. I permenantly sealed mine and the white smoke cloud is no more. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Boot it above 2500rpm more frequently and monitor. I’d hold off changing the turbo.
And check the valve in the oil filter housing as suggested already Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
