4.4 TDV8 Vibration/Rumble - RPM related

Hi,

I've used the search to no avail and need some help!

2010 4.4 TDV8 ~100k miles

Symptoms
Low vibration/humming noise (I'd say a medium volume). It's difficult to say where its coming from, almost low down in the transmission tunnel area, but it could just be travelling through the chassis. It does sound similar to the cattle grid noise others have reported.

Conditions
I've managed to provoke the noise with certainty under the following conditions:
Any gear (that I can legally test on the road)
It isn't road/wheel speed related
It happens at any engine temperature
Comes on softly at ~2700 rpm increasing in volume to ~3000 rpm
It drops off almost immediately after ~3000 rpm and stops
It happens in Drive, Sport and Sport Manual (I used sport manual to pinpoint the exact rpms and prove existence in each gear up to including 4th
It only happens under load (does not continue to vibrate when you lift off and engine brake back through this range)

I've recently changed my rear propshaft centre bearing in the following thread, it had no impact on the noise:

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic62227.html

After more thought, it's surely wouldn't be anything after the torque converter anyway as the rpm of the propshaft etc. will change and is not the same as engine rpm, therefore I would expect to experience the vibration at different engine rpms, which I don't.

My initial suspicions are the torque converter/lock-up clutch. Is there anything I can do to try and eliminate this to test? Is a gearbox fluid change/flush likely to help?

Any help appreciated

Chris

still sounds prop related to me. did you get it balanced or checked for balance? they have counter weights on the and they can fall off. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Hi,

counterweight still present - marked up and assembled in same orientation it was removed.

You mean to UJ on the prop after the bearing?

As per above, I don't think its the prop as I'd experience vibrations at different rpms as I work through the gear - it exists at the same rpm in any gear

Measure & record engine speed, turbine speed, output speed and the EDS 2 solenoid current vs time using IIDTool or similar and analysis of the results will tell you whether it’s the TC LUC causing the vibration. Never seen results from an 8-speed before, so would be interesting Very Happy

I have same problem.
You are not alone !

MY11. 4.4 TDV8. 100k miles
Between 2500 rpm and 3000 for me
Rumble which is rev and not speed dependant

I posted this a while back and was asked if rumble was there at standstill.
And it is
But because throttle load required to get the revs up with car at standstill is small, the rumble is slight.
So not transmission.

Some extra info from my experiences
I can use flappy paddles to get revs up and over 3k through the rumble zone
Now this is where it gets interesting
When the revs now drop from above 3k revs where there is no rumble into the rumble zone, there is NO rumble
Until the revs have dropped below 2200 for a while and you go back up

My thought was that it was 2nd turbo related as the rumble zone starts at the rpm when the 2nd turbo kicks in.

Something is sticking.
Changed the actuator on the CSOV but this didn’t cure it

There is no loss of power

FWIW- my last MOT had an advisory for central bearing in middle propshaft, but this was 10k miles ago and the problem only appeared a few thousand miles ago, and is also there at standstill.

The problem is recreated at will....not intermittent for me.

If I were to describe it,
I would say it is a resonance in the exhaust system somewhere
Under your feet to maybe slightly behind you

Any ideas out there what could be resonating in the exhaust system but only between 2,500rpm and 3,000 rpm?

There are lots of heat shields that will resonate if touching something.

Is it possible....

That the cause of the rumble / resonance is the EGR failing to properly close when the 2nd turbo spins up because the EGR valve is sticking, and only properly closes a few hundred rpm higher than it should ?
Which would explain why the rumble / resonance doesn’t re-appear again until the EGR opens once again for single turbo operation and the revs go up again?

No error codes however ......
And I hope it’s not the EGR as that is not such a cheap job .....

@RRPhil - thanks. Not invested in IIDTool yet (only had the car since October) - top of my list so will follow advice and report back!

@Rambles - nice to know I'm not the only one (selfish!). Everything you have reported is identical to my symptoms.

I've just done a gearbox oil & filter change (both ZF parts) as part of a service, but I wanted to see if it even slightly changed the symptoms to see if it could be TQ related - it hasn't. They're are identical. It's like a dull toned (but loud) vibration/hum which to my ears sounds like it's coming from the centre of the transmission tunnel.

I do have another issue which I think is completely separate - one of the bearings/pulleys on the engine is noisy/rattling. So I'll be changing that first and then looking into 2nd turbo and EGR.

Please keep the ideas coming, as the noise drives me nuts Smile

Did you check heat shields?

I have the same symptoms but they are between 1000 and 1200 rpm.

Can best describe it as similar droning noise as when a wheel baring is bad...

My indy is looking at it next week so hopefully sorted then RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

Yep heatshields checked - I couldn't see any issue. I had all the mid ones off when I changed the centre prop bearing.

It's more of a rotational drone than a tinny metallic vibration.

Let us know how it goes.

Checked my shields too. No obvious problem.
The rumble / resonance is deeper than I would expect to hear from vibrating / rattling heat shields, and I wouldn’t be able to explain why the heat shields rattle / rumble as the revs rise from below 2500 to above 3000 rpm where the rumble / resonance crisply stops, but no rattle as the revs decrease from above 3000rpm.
I still think it is something to do with 2nd turbo activation.
Either something is continuing to operate a while longer than it should.....eg EGR not closing or something not operating properly to activate the 2nd turbo.
On the activation side, my other thoughts are
Sticking turbine shut off valve at back of 2nd turbo
Vacuum pump, vacuum valve solenoid, and pipe work
Air shut off / recirculation valve

Maybe the vacuum lines have lost their rigidity with age, and are collapsing

Could be a case of gradually replacing parts until I get to the one that works !

Some more insight into symptoms...

I can't replicate the noise at standstill, free-revving. But if I drive along in D say 30mph and switch to neutral (I knew this could be done with ZF8 in previous BMW) then rev, it makes the noise BUT.....at 2000rpm...every time. But when under load in D, it does it religiously at ~2700 rpm to to ~3000 rpm.
