So in 4 weeks time we are off to the Highlands for the week. This will be the first real long trip for my new 4.4, so I'm rather looking forward to the drive up there. However I have a slight problem, last week I broke me foot in 2 places and have been advised I'm looking at 6-12 weeks to fully recover, not what I really wanted to hear. I'm hoping it heals enough for me to walk short distances. And to compound matters it's become infected, so some holiday it's going to be for me, especially with 3 teenagers and only me can drive. Just hope I can have a nice comfy drive in the fatty.

Bit of a bummer that. Which foot? Be very careful about the infection. Hope it turns out alright - foot and holiday.  John

Thanks weegie, it's my left foot so at least I can still drive. But then it depends on how the infection is. On antibiotics, strong ones so hopefully the infection be gone by the time I go. If anybody about up that way we could meet up for a coffee.

Sorry to hear about your foot.

Please note if the locals tell you that the way to get infection out of a foot is to stick your left leg out the window and let the Scottish midges eat the infection - they may be pulling your leg

Thanks Douglas, what you said about the midges sounds quite believable though it's not something I would try . I would post a pic, but I think it would be too graphic. It's much better than what it was though.
I'm very much looking forward to the holiday, been up there a few times and always enjoyed it.

In relation to midges, one tip is to take some Avon Skin So Soft with you. It is recommended as an ant-midge screen. John

Midgies aren't the real problem these days. Yes, they are a bloody nuisance, but they won't kill you!

The Mozzies are getting worse up here and they can leave you feeling iffy for a day or two.

However, the really scary one is the Dark Giant Horsefly. Not only is it the heaviest fly in Europe, it's bite is ranked in the top ten worst bites in the insect world. These guys have become very prevalent up the Tay valley and across highland Perthshire towards Tummel & Rannoch. They are all over the Highlands too.

Avon skin so soft and the like don’t actually stop the midges landing on you and crawling about … which is half the issue with them. I’ve yet to try these, but they look ok like a possible mitigation to them.

Seen a few of those horse flies in the past too … they are whoppers. V8 or else ...

Jeez jmc, the amount of times I've been up there I've not seen any those horse flies. I'm sure you'd hear a big whack if one bounces off your windscreen.
Skin so soft worked well for us last year and of course we put anti midge candles out at night which worked very well indeed.
