Best diesel

Hello everyone

With the L322, there’s the general opinion that the TDV8 is the best engine and the 4.4 is better than my 3.6…

I’m looking at buying an L405, 2020 ish, and wondered what the best diesel engine is. Is it still the 4.4? Tym
(current) L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue 2008 Tonga Green
(previous) L322 4.4 LPG Vogue SE 2003

If it sticks, force it. If it breaks, it needs replacing anyway.

A petrol!! depending on your driving style L405's diesels suffer from oil dilution if you do a lot of short journey's. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Haha. Fuel consumption figures? My 3.6 can do 35 on a long run. Tym

If you’re concerned about fuel consumption, why have a Range Rover at all? Depending on your mileage, a 5.0 SC will not be that much different cost wise, given the price difference between diesel and petrol. At least that is what my man maths tell me as I search for a 5.0 ………..

Style, elegance, go-anywhere-do-anything, ride height... etc. etc.

Reason for asking is the TDV8s are seen as better that the 3.0 in the L322, but I only ever see SDs for L405... Tym

I think for the cost-conscious the SDV8 is still regarded as the 'best'. The TDV6 will never recover its reputation of lunching itself and the diesel v8 gives the best all round experience for range rovers in most peoples' eyes. Boat loads of torque, the right sounds and decent economy. There are arguments for the petrol ones too, especially if you're doing mainly short journeys.

Some swear by the petrol ones, but I would say those owners are more die-hard petrolheads, or diesel haters. I called myself a petrolhead once, but having seen what a decent diesel can do I'm a convert. It probably helps I have considerable mechanic experience and can deal with the usual issues that diesels suffer from. Cam

Thank you. Must admit I am starting to consider the petrol, but over two years diesel will be about £6500 and Petrol £7800, that's £325 a month as opposed to £ 270. Not massively different, I admit, but every penny counts Smile Tym

I’ve had an SDV8 for 6 years. No issues with it at all and on a run will give around 38-40mpg. Shorter, stop start motoring around 25 mpg. Makes lovelly sound too.

I've got an SDV8 405 and I find it fine, previously I had a 5.0L Supercharged petrol and indeed it was quicker but I never used the extra acceleration. Touch wood, although I change the oil regularly, I do short journeys, use the cheapest fuel I can lay my hands on and so far its been problem free for my 3 years of ownership. I do wish my neighbour would hurry up and finish his extension though although I guess I cant blame the car for that Rolling with laughter

I had a 3.6 TDV8, then a 2011 4.4 TDV8 (which was night and day different to the 3.6).

I now have an L405 4.4 SDV8 A/B and it is sublime (except the seat bases, but that's work in progress with a custom upholsterer Laughing ). The SDV8 is so well suited to the L405, and the improvements in suspension and stiffening of the chassis, make it more than sprightly enough. I can still accelerate quicker than a lot of other cars even when towing 3T behind me.

The D350 6 cylinder Ingenium is supposed to be good however, but for me, the SDV8 is the best of the bunch. I'd be a little concerned the 6 cylinder doesn't have so much grunt unless on boost when it comes to heavy towing, that's based on my experience of a Mercedes E350 6 cylinder diesel. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi

I’m on the 3.L 300 HP Ingenium engine.

I had to take what I was given , I might of specked the 350 given the opportunity. If it’s bigger it must be better, school of thought.

Truth is it’s a fantastic engine , I’m on my 4th diesel, and for me this is the best.
Responsive , twitch of the big toe & I had a speeding fine & an awareness course.
Glides up to 100 mph, I rarely go faster than 110 mph. In France sits at 90 mph cruise & without a care.

Two year servicing . Regens at much lower speeds, 30mph??? IMHO It’s better than the 4.4L 405

Bill Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Given my annual mileage the 5.0 would have been fine. Not that the TDV8 has ever been a problem due to short runs.

But, regarding the L322, the TDV8 4.4 is more than adequate - any more power, ompf and speed the 5.0 delivers, I’m not sure I’d want or like it. It can’t go around corners so more power only scares me 😬

But I would switch for the sound alone… 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

I believe that the diff between D300 and D350 is not a "bigger" engine, but just a different engine map. So, if you wanted D350 performance, you just need to get your engine re-mapped to the D350 map, instead of the D300 map.

I've seen lr-chip.co.uk as a site that does it. I've not used them, so just as a reference to a website, not a recommendation.

I don't know about the Ingeniums, but there's a similar concept with some of the Mercedes engines, which people assume are just a map. On the Mercedes engines, the cubic capacity is "the same" but the cylinders are given a slightly wider bore and stroke, the turbo has a different part number and is different (potentially a bigger and lighter impeller), and fuel rail pressure is increased by 10% to 2700 PSI (and therefore the injection system also has modifications). All of this is in addition to different engine mapping.

I expect it's not just a map between the D250, D300 and D350. But then again, it is Land Rover. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
