United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Vogue TDV6 Santorini Black

Before purchasing my TDV6 I had test drives of a TDV8 and also a SCV8 and they were all great. Ideally I would have gone for the SCV8 as that was just superb but I just felt the mpg would be just too much of an issue.

I really didn’t see such a gap between the TDV6 and TDV8 as to be the reason I chose the car I did. My choice ended up being based on the car overall and the engine was not the deciding factor once I knew it would be a diesel. If I was ordering brand new then may be that would have been different, but still not sure I would order a TDV8 over a TDV6 (if you could still order new).

So, all the ‘benefits’ listed of the TDV8 of being effortless, ticking over on the motorway, power to overtake, smooth constant torque etc etc also apply to the TDV6. After 20,000 miles and 2 years of owning my RR I am yet to have found a situation where I had needed more power. It’s the torque that really matters in these cars. The TDV6 produces 600Nm and the TDV8 produces 700Nm, neither are lacking in any way with those figures.

The much debated crank issue on TDV6 engines needs to be considered, but it wasn’t a sufficiently large factor for me to discount the engine as an option. There are plenty of reports of issues but the silent majority who don’t post threads just to say ‘engine working normally today’ has to also be considered.

Cam belt was not a big deal either. I bought my car knowing it would be due in a year and that was factored into the price. It cost me £750 for the cam belt service at a specialist LR independent.

In summary - buy the car as a whole weighing up all the pro’s and con’s but I wouldn’t get hung up on if it is a TDV6 or TDV8.

Thanks Alex for the perspective. I am in effect doing what you say as the V8 is the 18 facelift which I prefer and which despite the price I feel it may be a better bet in terms of deprecation. Also there are other aspects of the car that I prefer in terms of spec and so if it was a 3.0 I don't think it would in any way put me off. With that said I think it would be nice too have one of the last of the big V8's for a while and as it is mostly going to be for the longer journeys (two daughters at Scottish university's) probably a better fit

I am new to the forum but have just put on the road a 2014 range rover autobiography ith the 4.4 tdv8 engine. This engine has been fully rebuilt including both turbos. It cost the earth, but I've had every other large 4x4 including the Toyota land cruiser Amazon.
This car is beautiful it drives better than any other 4x4 I've had, the engine sounds magnificent, I've not messed with it it's standard Inc egr, dpf. First range rover I've had but I love it.
I could never understand wanting to own one but having now owning one I'm regretting not owning one yrs ago.

Having looked deeper into this now, I hadn't realised how scarce the late model V8's are. post the 2019 year facelift they were clearly scaling them down. The price differential of about £7k must have put some buyers off but I think there may have been a shortage of supply which was why dealers were pushing customers toward the V6. Having spoken to a few no franchise dealers it seems that the last of the V8's are now becoming sought after and prices firming up and heading north. Not sure whether that is to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Both bad choices now I’d say - look on eBay / autotrader there are as many seized 4.4 as 3.0… and the 3.0 outsold the 4.4 nearly 3-1 Current stable:

Wow, so many. So the V6 snaps cranks and the V8 spins shells. Quite alarming!

Yep I’ve been keeping an eye for a while as 4.4 seemed logical but not considering a petrol or a dirty MHEV 😂

If you check every couple of weeks others appear for both 3 and 4.4 Current stable:

Gone:

Difference between them is that the V6 wrecks cranks in quite new/low mileage engines but the V8 problems tend to be on 10 year old cars, 10 years is long enough for plenty of abuse and lack of proper maintenance.

I’m on my 4th V8 Diesel - no issues with any of them, otherwise I wouldn’t have kept buying them - all have been serviced on time and by the main dealers. In comparison I have several friends and also a family member who have had V6 crankshaft failures. One friend even has a Discovery which is on its 3rd engine - all failed at low miles and replaced by LR 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Anyone got any experience of the D300/D350 engine? There are few lower mileage 2019 4.4's on AT, but anything later than that is going for stoopid money.

But some early D300/D350's are popping up now. I think these are Ingenium engines? That engine seems to have a bad rep in 2.0 cars e.g. Disco's according to stuff on youtube?

I didn't know if that would be the case for the RR D300/D350 too?

Ultimately, unless I go 5.0 (tempted!), then I'm between 4.4 or the D300/350. (PS - same trouble on later 5.0's - silly money for any 2021's that come up)

Thoughts welcome! Smile

Do as I did - find a dealer with a D350
And a V8 Diesel and drive them back to back - preferably on your own - that will certainly crystallise your thoughts. Whilst the BHP is the same - the Torque output isn’t - the V8 wins hands down. The only reason LR discontinued the V8 Diesel is it’s a Ford derived engine and their agreement ended - otherwise it would still be in production. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Thanks Vogue, agree re: "driveability". My question was as much about "reliability" as Ingenium seemed to have a bad press. Smile
