Heavy good license renewal

Hi everyone, just wondering if you can help me out.

When a heavy goods license runs out and needs renewing, is it true you have up to 5 years to renew it before having to start from scratch?

cant see that on the 'gov' page..it looks like you have to renew every 5 years from 45 years of age.

I hold the class 1. Up to age 45 it remains valid.
After 45 until 60 you have to have a medical every 5 years
After 60 the medical is more frequent, every 2 years I think.

Anyway, if you let the licence lapse by not renewing it on to your normal car licence (still have seperate HGV) then it still remains valid, you just have to send off to DVLA and get it added to the photocard thing. You get a card with a chip in it now for the new electronic tachographs.

Mick, it doesn't actually lapse. All you would have to do is pass the medical AFAIK. That's all I did. Then applied to DVLA and it was all OK.

OK, as long as you have passed the HGV test, now called C+E, the only bit which lapses is the medical. Go have a medical and send it off to DVLA with your photocard licence and you should get the licence back with all your entitlements.

Give the helpline a call and they'll tell you exactly what to do. Remember, you have passed the test so you are licenced, only your proof of being medically fit has run out.
